i do have a fridge in the garage but it the other end of the garden and i don't want my keg and tap etc. around bugs and whatever in the garage

Fair enough. I've got mine in the garage and it's very annoying to run outside for a pint. I could probably find space indoors for a keg but not for the CO2. One day I'll run a line to a proper tap in the kitchen.

My mate uses these tap stoppers for his beer taps in the garage:

It’s easy enough to modify a cheap fridge - gas in through the side via 20mm gland, taps on the front, and one of these temp controllers from ebay in place of the thermostat for a few quid:
In general, lager at 4degC, ales at 10-12degC, as I have to explain patiently to ‘our American cousins’ when they witter on about warm English beer.

I had cornies set up with a remote tap in the kitchen in our last house. (brewery was in the outhouse on the other side of the wall).
Probably the worst thing I ever did, it was just so tempting. Walk in the kitchen, spy the beer tap, don't mind if I do!
My beer consumption went down considerably when I moved the tap back outside.

I seem to recall my brother having at least one glass demijohn that was larger than a 1 gallon capacity. Am I dreaming?
Going to make mead with a gallon of water and 4lbs of honey. Too much for a standard gallon jar and too little I think for a 20L fermenting bin.

My yeast and new jam pot turned up. Got to get my backside in gear and actually make the mead now. Undecided on the recipe yet:
Demijohn still needs more cleaning where it's been living outside for years.
Clearing my Dad's shed I found a vintage, 12W Brewbelt. Actually made in the UK. Removed the uninsulated plug, cut the manky lead and fitted a new plug. Plugged in and it heats up as it should.
The house gets bloody cold so I don't want to slow the fermentation down. Don't even have an airing cupboard. I was debating strapping a cheap cylinder stat to the demijohn, to control the belt to avoid overheating though unlikely. Thoughts?

the brewbelts are only 25watts, & you adjust the temperature by sliding the belt down to raise it or up to lower it. I’ve got one & it’s just gone wrong & my brew has gone cold, they are very poorly made, it all came apart before & I had to feed the element back in, now it’s stopped altogether, I suspect the element has gone.
EDIT, yes it’s the element gone & it’s in the bin, ordered one of a different make now, I hope that’s better.

It will be fine if it has been kept with the lid closed.
Just use a bit of bleach and give it a good rinse out afterwards. 1 tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water, cheap as chips and kills just about everything.
