As a bit of an experiment, I've moved of my pepper-or-chilli plants from the lean-to into the standalone greenhouse. I'm a bit concerned that it'll be too hot for them, but that might do them some good so I'll see what happens. I've also moved two tomato plants outside. The tomatoes get very droopy over the afternoon while I'm out, so it'll be good to see if this helps.

Ow!
Decided to start clearing for the veg patch extension. By hand, shears and scythe, pulling up the tufts. Green stuff in one barrow, flints in another. Bloody hard going. Feeling a bit guilty about evicting anything plus there's a couple of pyramid orchids sprung up. BiL offered to do it with the digger but I said I'd do it "sensitively".
Hang on...my left leg is on fire...
Pulled up the leg of my cut down jeans and my thigh is covered in red ants. Boots, socks and shorts whipped off on the lawn pronto before they climbed any "higher"
Jumping in the shower then I think it's off for a few pints of my favourite medicine.
I know how Jay felt now, "Pain!"

I've been out all day today, and even though I gave them some food before I went out, my tomato plants are now very droopy indeed. I hope I haven't killed them. I've given them a load of water, hope they appreciate it.

Tomatoes seem to have recovered after yesterday, and I gave them a load of water this morning and they've survived today, too.
Have you tried capillary matting to keep them hydrated.

10/12 of the butternut squash have come up so far. Should I be feeding them now? They're the two x6 trays bottom right.
The rest are the tongue of fire beans. Didn't manage to get the bed done for them this weekend. Currently they don't have a home.

No, I haven't tried anything scientific, I'm just getting used to it. I did find some pointy things that screw onto the end of 500ml plastic drinks bottles and dispense water gradually into the soil, so I'll be trying those out soon. I also found some lengths of thin plastic pipe that suggest my mother has previously tried some sort of watering system and abandoned it for some reason.

It's emergency bean trench time!
I'm not going to get the other veg patch cleared and these 45 bean plants have to go in this weekend at the latest. They're looking for something to climb!
Tonight we got the steel frame re-erected after the 3D printed connectors failed in last year's heat. New connectors printed and I'll add reinforcing gussets rivetted at all the joints.
Then it'll be a mattock widths trench:
I'll brave the snakes and get some well rotted manure from the BiL's pile in there, mixed with the soil that came out less and stones. Something like this:

I should have had the whole plot dug to depth but alas I didn't. The central bit that was "digger dug", where the bean trench is, is easy to dig. The space either side is the poor ground. Trying to dig even slit trenches and I'm hitting a flint bed. Reckon the easiest way out is dig until I hit flint then put a board along and build raised beds to the height of the sleepers. This to increase growing depth.

Following on from the sketch above I got up early yesterday and dug the slit trench to 18" deep. Back breaking getting through the flints!
Then I made a loose U shape "gutter" with some dpc and forked the bottom here and there:
Into the bottom went 6" of 10 year old manure:
Fof the raised bed edge I scored a length of pine straight from the BiLs log mill:
That's gone in with some batten stakes, the bit at the end I was short of is a bit of decking that's on the turn:
