@Barking Mat , hedgehogs, you being the forum expert. Got any plans for hedghog "houses"?
Not sure if I have them in my garden but I'd like to try and attract them.

Interesting, the dog kicked off at 4pm yesterday, same incessant barking indicating a hedgehog, but 4pm ? Turned out the dog had found a hedgehog deep in the hedge, I couldn't get to it, neither could the dog, I could see it, but it was inaccessible. So I just told the dog to leave it.
I think / believe hogs will just be happy with hedgerose, compost heaps, piles of sticks / branches, even palettes on the floor, in my experience they'll sleep anywhere.
But a pile of branches, would be my suggested idea, a pallet, or half pallet, at the bottom.
I'm not really a hedgehog authority, I just get a lot of them, and know what they like.
Cat food, not fish, dog biscuits, never ever milk, and cuddles, lots of cuddles.
Yes they're spiky, but you get your hands underneath, easy to pick up.
Cuddle them for 20 - 30 minutes, normally they come out to play, on their tummies.

Just to add, hedgehogs only come out at night, if you see them during the day they're not right, late evening, early morning ok.

My rare medicinal herbs have grown a little. Seeds came late, sown on June 14th. If they survive in pots outside the window, overwinter, then I will be able to separate the roots (for root propagation) only in the fall of next year. And you will probably see your real seeds in 2025. This is a long project. Approximately 30 sprouts in total. I hope this will be a base nursery, for scaling.

Slugs and snails seem to be growing best here!
The tongue of fire beans and butternut squash are taking a right hammering.
The traditional runners aren't doing too bad but I've only got flowers on the plants about halfway up. The leaves near the ground ate like a colander

Don't knock the giving away bit. For the price of a packet of seeds and a bit of looking after I find it nice to pop round a neighbours with a few beans etc. It's old school, neighbourly, community spirited etc.

Try blue lake French runner beans they can easily get to six feet high , I set nine seeds they came on great , so we've frozen loads this year as well as dill pickled five jars of them and of course eaten loads simply lightly cooked or thin sliced raw in salads or soups like minestrone soup which freezes well too .
This year i have been succesfull growing tomatoes, tried a few new varieties instead of the usual moneymaker toms from the horticultural society.
Consuelo have done well & really tasty then these Romainian Beefsteak tomatoes, I planted this plant up against the house in a nice south facing sun trap.
Loads of manure & compost & it went berserk. I have never grown tomatoes like this before, well pleased!
Trouble is we now have to eat them all at once, tomato salad, stuffed tomatoes, tomatoes with mozzarella & basil etc etc!

Damn bureaucrats, destroyed delicious tomatoes, for the sake of tasteless foam rubber fruits. I ordered native tomato seeds from Ukraine, what they should be.

I don't think you have completely understood the term Marketing . They just have to LOOK good on the shelf or in the packet it's up to the customer to make them taste edible.

I adhere to the version and the line that officials got into the genetic standards of vegetables approved for reproduction. Pursuing good goals, but in fact, "rubber" won. Today, native varieties from my childhood cannot be found on the local market. I reordered seeds from Ukraine, having missed this season, because kind people bought Netherlands seeds for the Ukrainian market.
They misunderstood what I needed. The country of origin was printed in small print on the packaging. This time, grandmother specially prepared seeds from her garden. She doesn't care about the seed market.

The only others I like are
beef tomatoes but I rarely get decent fruit from them. They end up small with brown in the tops.I agree about tasteless modern tomatoes, horrible things. The romainian ones i have on the go are Captain beefheart variety & taste really good.
Consuelo are as tasty as you can get, I have a couple of Tigrella as well, not reckoned to be that tasty but in good soil & compost they are lovely.

They freeze as hard as billiard balls . So cut and wrap in cling film & deep freeze to use in soups & stews , or skin in hot water & whizz to a mush , boil , bag and freeze when cold .
When you use whole defrosted toms the skins slide off if you squeeze the tomato .
I've got some Ukrainian heirloom toms from Grandma's saved seed much like yours , biggest so far was 1 pound 9 ounces . Nearly all to outside toms have been slapped with blight /cold shock ? .. 8 oC one night despite de-leafing the vines , the glasshouse toms have fared much better .
Olha our refugee guest says that had the summer been fiercely hot like it is in Ukraine the toms would have been almost twice as big .

Actually, you know what slugs hate, and can't cross? A strong solution copper sulphate, sprayed along the edges.

I have some, bought as big pack of crystals. Was going to spray my roof to keep the moss down. Then I read it's toxic to amphibians so haven't used it. (Our roof water drains to the garden). I don't want to be harming the myriad frogs, toads, newts etc that we have here. Just wish they'd do a better job!

There are flexible polymer tapes with 2 copper tracks. The power supply supplies a small voltage, slugs and snails cannot overcome this barrier.
