Normally turn it over to mesh on the outside of the big gear as shown in the diagram, ineffect using a gear not in use behind as a spacer.

Think id get the manual and have a compare with the gears you have, and what you need for the threads you may want to cut.

Oh dear! Yes you will need to identify which threads you want to cut and any changes required to you current gear train. 56 plus by the sounds of it, make a spacer the same width as a std gear plus 0.5mm (allows clearance so the gear edges don't rub together.

You need the right one for your model lathe. Itgives you a larger range of feeds and pitches with fewer change gears

I think that is. Mine us a Aud I will have a look tomorrow.

Look at gear box position column, the gears in your gearbox work in conjunction with the change gears to cut the required thread.



So to cut the range 1 - 2mm pitch you would need 56, 32, 28, 24, 26, 20, 44 plus the compound gear you already have. You can probably not bother with the 44 and 26.

I got a set of suitable gears (Delrin plastic) from you_engraving on ebay. Just say for Boxford AUD and he’ll know what specs are needed, if you tell him which tooth numbers you want.

Sorry, I meant it was a photo you already had in your computer ('in stock') that happened to show the translation gear in the correct place, but not being used as a translation gear. You had not gone out to the shed specially to take one in answer to his specific question about how to set up for cutting metric threads.

I did go out to the workshop especially to take that photo. My translation great stays in situ.

Threading is only hard if you appraoch it with trepidation. Think your operation through, start slowly and you'll find it's not so bad as you imagined.

As you say, the smaller gear acts as a spacer for the 56t, which engages on the 100t wheel.
Changewheels pop up from time to time on eBay, Home Workshop, and other sites.

A point to note, @a111r came to me few months back for me to cut a special screw for him. I looked at the wheel and thought, that's not a 56 (it has 44 cast into it). I spent ten or fifteen minutes in a fruitless search for my 56t wheel. Later on, having found another way around the problem, I counted the teeth on the wheel. Yes, 56
