Can't believe I didn't post this one before, especially seeing as I've been a volunteer there for some time now

Home of the worlds largest working steam mill engines all 3000 horse power of them and can be seen working on the first Sunday of the month.

Other engines and machinery also on display.

Free to visit on non steaming Sundays and Tuesdays and easy access of junction 21 of the M62 near Milnrow, Rochdale.

The web-site has recently been updated too.

we have been to the Fred Dibnah Heritage Centre in Bolton today.

We had a great day out looking around Freds workshops, his yard and even his house, the owner saved it all from being flattened and built on.
Alf one of Freds best friends was there.He showed us the mine shaft and recounted many stories . we were there 3 hours . you need to pre book but they seem to have all day to stand and chat to ya. if you like Fred and old school engineering then this is a great day out.
very good value for money.
and they are slowly carrying on with some of Freds visions for the site.
A very interesting and important engineering site hopefully saved for generations to come.

Mushroom Green chain shop

The Mushroom Green chain shop in the Black Country is the only remaining chain shop in its original location. It is open from Spring to Autumn on the second Sunday of the month and you can have a go!

The Kennal Vale gunpowder works at Ponsanooth Cornwall.
Found it by accident on our honeymoon 20 odd years ago. Its a steep wooded valley filled with abandoned granite buildings & collosal blast walls, It was all water powered & some of the water wheels are still there. Literally like finding a lost city in the amazon jungle.
Its privately owned & the access is tiny so blink & you miss it.
Thoroughly recomended.

I've looked through the thread and didn't see Papplewick pumping station in it so I'll suggest a visit to it. If you go on a steam day the beam engine is running and you can go into the underground reservoir at the top of the hill, it's vaulted brick construction and like a cathedral, real craftsmanship.

yup been there a few times well worth a visit some days they have engines steamed up

Seconded. Used to live up near York and it was a regular visit for me. Try to go on a steaming day.

I was going to go over in the early new year but they have an event on in july with last of the Gresley a4's commemorating 75 years since mallard set the speed record. So i might wait for that, leeds armoury is on the to do list as well.

In Chesterfield I give you, Barrow Hill, Britain's last surviving working Roundhouse.

Free on non-steaming days, steam engines, diesel engines, small, large, all sorts. Engines in various states of repair/restoration and a good cooked to order sit down cafe thats cheap.

And of course the other alternative cafe once a year.....

Even tho it as been said a few time'd id have to recommend blists hill museum, especially when they have some of there machinery going, like the black smiths or a few months ago i went to the heavy metal weekend.

During that they had the furnace going with the steam hammer going that shakes the ground when it hits, including the rollers going powered by a steam engine that makes a sowing machine seem noisy.

A shame but just outside the furnace building is a old and silly big lathe in dis repair/derelict state.

From the last time i was there they also have a workshop full of drills etc all powered over head from belts to a steam engine, they even had a few very early electric motors in there.

Would defiantly say keep an eye out on there site for events weekends.

I saw that on the internal e-mail system, I may have to make a small diversion next time I go to the overall stores as I have to pass through the Defender build area.

Blists Hill in steam is 2-4th May. Gonna try to get to that as I'm yet to see the big rolling mills and hammer running.

Should be going to Beamish next weekend all being well. There's a steam rally on which attracts quite a few vehicles so even more than usual to see.
