Should be going to Beamish next weekend all being well. There's a steam rally on which attracts quite a few vehicles so even more than usual to see.

we went on thursday great day out you need to go early!!!!!! i think the carpark was full to capasity by lunch time

i would sugest you take a drink with you as we waited 25 mins in a Q to get a cupper and a pasty

but seeing some wonderfull steem powered machinery made up for it

Land rover 1948 production line recreated

My Land Rover club organised a group booking recently, one group in the morning and another in the afternoon which is when I went. Had a great time, well worth going.
A few pics from the re-created production line, the only part of the factory where we were allowed to take pictures.

This chassis belongs to my club (Land Rover Series One Club), it was owned by the army and used for training hence the 'cut outs' in gearbox casing etc (perhaps not too clear in the picture).

I found it by chance as I was looking for a local garden center (which happens to be very good). We had a superb time and my little boy loved it, we had to drag him out of the place. Most of the engines were under steam and beautifully restored. It was free but I was more than happy to make a donation as it's run by volunteers.
Its just off the A1 at Doncaster.




The wheel on the engine in second picture weighs 24 tons!

forgot -1of the best; Bristol museum 1 of the wharf buildings,dont know the name ,just along from ss great britain,by all those stothert & pitt cranes.

I went there when I was at Brunel tech. college years ago. They had an "exploded" Bristol Centaurus engine on display. Brilliant.
A couple of good ones near where we live now are the windmill at Wilton, and just over the hill on the Kennet and Avon canal, the steam pumping station. Both working museums (on certain days in season) and well worth a visit.

British Ironwork Centre on the A5 near Oswestry........

Never been but drove past loads of times, looked at the sign and thought - oooh.............and then promptly forgot about it.

The old Millers Dale station in Derbyshire has two fantastic bridges you can walk over and marvel at. There are also lime kilns, quarries, loaders and tunnels either side, plus lots of lovely nature.

The Mining Museum at Matlock Bath is also great, as are the fluorspar caverns at Treak Cliff (I think) with old drills left down there.

You can also visit the remains of High Rake Mine in Great Hucklow (nr Buxton).

New Mills Heritage Centre has a lovely model of the old town and usually has a good selection of local exhibits centering on the cotton and calico industries that once dominated the area.

I was in Kelham Island in Sheffield on Saturday...........actually not the Museum the Pub........Theres a bit of a recognised crawl around the real ale houses around there. I partook of the real ale with gusto

Brunel Tech .... was there late eighties / early nineties. Went past a while ago and it looks like it's all houses now.
Was great on a nice day to "bunk off" and go and watch the cricket at the county ground just across the way. Bad weather you could find us up the sportsman lol

Wheel Martyn China Clay Museum was a good trip . Went there just before starting work down in Devon for a company that supplied quarry plant and Structures .
It was nice to get a bit of knowledge so it made it sound like I knew what I was talking about

That's the 'M shed' in Bristol harbour. Steam crane and oldest steam tug in world outside too

Calderdale Industrial Museum

This has rececently re-opened and is staffed by volunteers, it is the original museum that ran from up until 2000, and then was closed, but the exhibits were kept.

amongst the exhibits has a selection of machine tools made in the local area, and local industries. the volunteers who staff it are very helpful, and have been involved with the industries that are shown. The 3 steam engines they have are only display items and they need £48,000 for a new boiler.

its open on saturdays from 10am to 4pm adults are £5 entry, concessions are £4 and children are free.

You know I used to walk past here with my dog regularly for 10 years , as I lived just round the corner, but only ever went once.

The steam meusem at Ryhope is also worth a visit, as is the railway one at Springwell forget its name, then of course Tanfield railway if your visiting beamish too.

Cragside is also very interesting from an industrial herritage point of view too

If you ever venture to the West of Scotland then head on down to the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre in Ayrshire. It's run by the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group www.arpg.org.uk

I'm a member and only recently managed to make one of their work days for the first time. We've got a fair selection of rolling stock - mostly goods wagons in varying states of repair, several Diesel shunting locos, a working steam loco, a fireless steam loco and a few steam engines awaiting restoration. We also have a museum with static exhibits from the industrial past of the area.

We hope to have another loco shed erected in the next 2-3 years so we can get more of the rolling stock under cover to work on.

The site is based on part of the Dunaskin Iron Works site - some of you may have been in the past and some of you will have seen Danny McCaskil doing his bike stunt riding there in one of his videos.
