Oh really...I think I have a complete toolpost the same as that. Actually identical
If it didn't index, I wouldn't be bothered. But it should, so I can't help feeling I should sort it.

I was just looking at the exploded view of the toolpost. I will have a look for the wedge although it's been kicking about in here foe years so the chances are is probably lostThank you!
I'll measure mine in a bit when I get in the workshop.
Yours seems to have at least one of the pieces mine is missing. Underneath the grime, yours looks in better condition than mine too.
Do you have the spindle? Or the little rotating wedge type thing that goes on the end of it?
Yes. Mine on yours you would most probably loose tool height centre@Machinery restorations
Mine is smaller than yours. No idea if the mechanisms are shared though, if imagine they are, and just the blocks changed.

The base of mine, oddly, is thicker than yours.Yes. Mine on yours you would most probably loose tool height centre
Thrust bearings mate@Machinery restorations
A question if I may though, in your pic, what is the O ring around. I can't tell from the diagram if it's a large spring or a thrust bearing.

Thanks. Couldn't tell if it was a spring to release downwards pressure when undone or a thrust.Thrust bearings mate
The tumbler is repairable. There is always broken or cracked parts to sort. I get a reasonable amount to do.Another bit of broken cast iron.
So that's 2 gears and the tumbler bracket.

I assume this will want V ing oit and brazing. Looks like im going to get some brazing practice!
On the plus side, there is only the apron and tailstock to take apart so can't be that many more broken bits to find! There is some (lots) of play in the carriage handwheel though.
Compound slide nut and screw have very little wear.
Cross slide though, now I've cleaned the nut, seems a bit sloppy. Might need to try my hand at making a new nut for it!
Yeah, I'm sure it will be fine. The tumbler is repairable. There is always broken or cracked parts to sort. I get a reasonable amount to do.
It's part of the parcel of old machinery. Cast gears can be a faff to sortNo exciting updates. Still doing a bit each day though, cleaning parts, sanding stuff.
I did find a broken gear (another! Wonder if it was crashed?) In the gearbox. It's FILTH in there and I don't really want to strip it yet, but I pulled a couple of bits out and cleaned the tooth.
Seems it's bent and cracked rather than just snapped off.

These are small gears, and the fact this hasn't just snapped off I'm taking as a sign it's probably steel.
Think I'm right?
It's been run like this, you can see by the wear. You can also see by the wear in the casting where this tooth has been pulling the lever out of gear!
Why you would continue to try and use this gear, quite alot too, is beyond me!
Would be great if it is as I'll just weld it. Handy considering my attempts at brazing the cast gears are currently going badly.
Yep, and I knew about most of them before I bought it, so no complaints, just opportunity to learn. It's part of the parcel of old machinery. Cast gears can be a faff to sort
At least they are already within my skills to sort then.Gearbox gears are probably mild steel, but it's not a rule.
