Land Rover Defender 110 Rebuild

I wont touch a Rover V8 with a barge pole either unless its for a customer, ripped out the one that came in my series one and its getting a ford engine now

My sons got a Defender at the moment (in the process of trying to sell it) with a Ford V6 Essex in it. I know that this is more normal for the series, but it seems a good conversion. Suits it well, cruises happily at 65,& loads of low down grunt.With the wide angle V it sits low in the chassis, so the noise seems to go out underneath & it's nice & quiet to travel in. I wonder if this is what LR would have done if they had access to the engine.

I fitted those gaiters to my 1968 109" 6 pot petrol Safari back in (guessing) 1980 ish - I seem to remember that you have to massage Vaseline into them to make the leather supple. Still only got 9.8 mpg towing a trailer though

I did the same when I rebuilt a '72 88" diesel. As I recall they are OK for road use but because of the lace up design if you take them off road especially into water they can hold grit etc and actually make things worse. I've just done the swivels on my current 90 and decided against fitting gaiters.

Its an excellent engine, mines only an 88" series one so very light compared to the defender and steeper gearing. Means it'll move like sh*t off a shovel!

I'm trying to sell my 109 at the minute too but no one seems to want it....thats got a 200tdi in it as well!

My sons is a Steve Parker kit, guessing it was originally for a series not a Defender, we don't know the history, apart from it was diesel, ex BT we think. I reckon the original engine gave up, & someone had the bits & an engine, so in it went.

Paddocks are the largest supplier in the UK of aftermarket parts for Land Rovers and their prices are hard to beat but beware the dreaded blue box (Britpart). You have to be careful ordering britpart or any other pattern part supplier, sometimes the quality can be truly awful. For important components I always try to buy genuine or OEM if possible. Britpart, Almakes, Bearmach, etc will all sell you genuine and OEM parts at much lower cost than bits in Land Rover boxes, look for the part number with a suffix "G".

LT77 box shares the same series LT76 pattern and set up so its a direct fit to that, only thing that differs is the clutch spline count

You can get an off the shelf extension loom for the ECU so you can stick it up in the roof out of harms way.

They get used on comp spec motors that spend a lot of time in the deep stuff. They are a wee bit pricey but can save headaches in the long run.

I'm looking at Bailcast gaiters for my swivel housings, I like the way they seal the joint completely.

No , she's made of tougher stuff than that, she'd stitch it up with mig wire, or plate it & pop rivets & carry on

Haha, sorry guys. I struggled with motivation a bit yesterday. I removed one side of the a frame. Yes I hurt myself again lol, Im sure I'm the clumsiest girl or person in history , it was cold as well so got anoyed and gave up.

Then today I had to do actual work lol, I knew the weather was bad so decided it's best to take the axel inside finally.
Super lazy I know but I got it up the garden like this lol

Tomorrow I plan on stripping both axles properly and working out what seals I need and what I don't need. Maybe I'll order all the clips I need as well from a Landrover place getting there slowly. Been running me down a bit.

Don't let it get you down, you've broken the back of stripping it. Just think forward to how you will feel screwing all those nice painted bits onto a nice new chassis with new bolts. One thing I always do & I'm sure you also think the same, is grease the bolts before fitting. It might be me that has to take it back apart later, can save hours of work.
