It is sad isn't it - more that we don't have the political strength to return more manufacturing capability back nearer home (and I mean that Europe wide, not just the UK).

You can buy European made welding masks - but not for 30 quid.

Much like a lot of stuff. You, the buying public have created this situation by buying the cheap crab for tuppence ha-penny rather than the expensive crap made nearer to home - never mind the more expensive decent stuff made here.

One of the issues I think is that sometimes when you think you are getting European made you are actually getting Chinese.

When you think so many items have automated processes it does make you wonder how such a vast price difference is possible.

Sometimes when looking on ebay you notice an item from China/Hong Kong and wonder how they manage to deliver it for the price offered, never mind manufacturing!

Just in case I make it look like I prefere European, I would much rather investment be put into our own shores, in particular the deprived areas of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

In my opinion (only an opinion) I believe we need to be looking at a greater independence from the rest of the world (in particular China, Russia, etc), as covid has shown us how vulnerable we are to global change/crisis!

However, to do this we need to be able to compete, and that means investment. It is a tragedy that our steel industries in the N.E. and South Wales have been allowed to fall!

Just an opinion!!

I am always amused when I hear this "Oh, we are going to bring manufacturing back to the UK" a very noble intent.
Just who, exactly, are we going to get to do this manufacturing? One of the "young Dears" than needs to retreat to their "safe space" if they so much as suspect they heard a raised voice? Good luck with that!

As an ageing bloke with no kids, I could just say "what will be, will be", but I don't want this country to fall on its face. Unfortunately however, I can see that happening as reality and idealism are not close partners when it comes to the future.

There were some of the black masks in my Lidl today so I took a good look at them & the viewing pane of the auto darkening unit in both the black & flame units is identical! They even use the same inner cover lens!

More bad news - the black masks use an outer cover that wraps around the side of the hood that will be unique to that mask! So a commonly available flat cover will not fit!

Just sent an e-mail off to the service agent asking about spare covers. Not holding out much hope as they are not shown on the spares website!

The "flame mask, as far as I can remember, came in two or three different styles, one of which was plain black.

The black mask with the larger viewing area is a different model and definitely has a larger area. I have the flame mask (a couple of years old now) and I have purchased the larger viewing version- but not used it yet!

Loads of these in the Fraserburgh shop. Also loads of tool batteries, chargers and impact wrenches. Couple of the welders too I noticed.

That's a completely different black mask to the one in Lidl over here!

Your flame mask is from Aldi, not Lidl!

They look like the correct ones, so they are available. It's just that the UK stores hadn't the foresight to stock them!

Turbo, you are very likely to be correct about the flame mask. As I have been getting so much of the Parkside stuff lately, I totally forgot I got it from Aldi. Sorry if I have been misleading with this!

The black mask was from the UK (Bury), they definitely had them in my local stores.

There are British products around. Good ones and not too expensive either.
For example buy a Rotobroach mag drill instead of an evo. Or Garryson carbide burrs instead of Chinese stuff.
The media have convinced people there is nothing made in Britain any more but that is simply not true.

Its been tried - the Hillman Imp built in Linwood . . . Triumph TR7 in Speke . . .and all the industrial disputes probably put anyone off ever trying it again . . .

EU rules prevented the UK keeping our industries afloat - maybe if we'd Brexited a few decades earlier . . .

My mask is going back to Lidl!

Firstly because they can't be arsed to answer my e-mail enquiring about spare covers.

Mainly because the design of it means that my 3M 7502 respirator will not comfortably fit under it! If you move the headband back to its furthest position it sort of works but that also moves your eyes away from the small viewing window giving you a very narrow field of view!

The new shell is probably the same as the GB version, but with a smaller filter unit. It's the big plastic bit under the screen that intrudes into the space inside & prevents me being able to wear this respirator.

There were a few of the black masks in Lidl, I'll check a few in case there are some with the large window fitted.
