The whole game has become a bit of a joke, non stop arguments about the difference between what's been cut and stacked as to what's been delivered ( a question for the hauliers ). The on site set up for chip and haul costs have escalated to the point where there is no return until between three to five loads have gone off site, then there is the timber stacks that get left behind if there is anything short of a full load. Wont mention the joke replanting schemes that fail through lack of husbandry.

Yup, it's completely broken.

The replanting schemes are beyond amusing, I know firm who redid a load that failed, the amount spent is astronomical!

Just seen latest Gov. idea to reduce emissions from fires from 5g/hr to 3gr/hr . Look forward to loads of underemployed council workers / police doing the checks.

My be a joke, to many, but its big business, if you look at timber in its entirety…there is no longer any waste, just different products, bought, sold and repurposed…..look at non peat composts….basically waste mulched about by machines, bagged, and sold. Biomass taking what was once just left to rot back in and feed the ground. Wood been burned to dry wood, to be sold to others to burn all for RHI.

But weight is an odd one…the harvester will know what it cut, the wagon what it loads, but itll be the weigh bridge at the end processor wholl calculate the money paid. The longer it sits about the more weight is lost.

Mr Jenkinson seems to do quite well from it, as do many others.

Round here it's between £55 and £70 per cu.m for softwood split and ready to burn. We're using this exclusively at the moment, but will start to add hardwood as it gets colder and we need the stove longer. Our stock for the Winter is around 50% hardwood from our own ground, 50% bought in softwood, by volume.

I noticed that lorry loads in Scotland are nearly half what we pay.

Does it devalue it or not? Seems like you have a business strategy issue.

Current prices I would be adding significant income to my business via firewood, I was mostly doing big removals, at the time we were giving rounds away as it wasn't worth the effort. Now it most certainly would be worth the effort.


As I said nothing stopping you building an arb contracting business aswell, in this world you need some self created insurance policy against lost income.

The firewood is currently my second business so I have diversity already.

To be honest the gov requirements are a joke

There more interested in burning waste which is a biggest unfreidly to the enviro which is unchecked

As goes for the wood stove well the con started years ago when they refused to stop the sale of none secondary air stoves

The best stove is xeoos but comes with a nice price tag

Though is beaten by the rocket stove for wood usage but has issues with output but untested another stove failed but its wood usage was interesting and its heat output for wood usage

In truth the enviro fumes is a con by many variations

But its all a way to force you to electric

Close to the forested areas I suspect! Its always cheaper by the lorry loads than the builders bag!

I've never been a fan of using the biggest bar possible.
My 550xp will see a 16"-18" bar, I can confidently fell a diameter 2.5x my bar length.

Unless im expecting to cut big wood the 550xp is always with me on jobs, these yanks running 25" bars on a 660 (90cc saw) cutting 6" wood is beyond my comprehension

My brother's got the same attitude.
I'm not sure what he's running just now, but he used to run an 18" bar on a 046 IIRC unless he really needed the bigger bar. He did have a 036 as well, but he preferred the extra power with the shorter bar and square chains for a quicker cut.

I'm think it's the 046 that's lying in bit across one of my workbenches though, as he figured after ~40 years use, a new saw might be a better investment.

Quite a lot of what we think of as acceptable"logwood"can give off toxins, not sure that the amounts used in log burners represent a significant threat to the environment. Log burners pale into insignificance when you take into consideration the natural forest fires which historically burned through entire continents, not saying they help the situation but in the overall picture its almost a witch hunt.

Its a hard game for anyone other than the end buyers, its a bit like the farmers and the supermarkets argument. There are guys out there on timber harvesters doing eighteen hour shifts to make ends meet. You wont see many living in mansions with this years Bentley parked in the drive.

But isn't that the same in any industry…….its like a pyramid, mansion and Bentley, supported by layers of lesser paid, with the minions along the bottom.
Travel the country far and wide, look behind the big stately type homes, you'll find there all built on the backs of the hard working man.

I must be dim but how do you measure the dry weight ?Presumably measure the 'wet weight' take a reading of the moisture content and work out the dry weight then add the moisture % penalty. There has to be an easier way.

It is supposed to be dry by law...however what the % figure?.... < 20% maybe? ....I don't know. I have a moisture probe *which is never used',

No problem, they have satelites that can measure it all, and pinpoint the stack emmitting it.

Google says there's only around 1.5million homes with wood burning stoves in the UK.

Bump it up to 30+million (uk homes) and you can bet the prices will be high and shortages of wood too.
No more freebie wood as 30 other people will grab it before you.
