That's the beauty of the world - we all like different things, do different things, having been given the freedom to do so.

I wonder if previous generations had similar conversations - he's always playing with that Mamod . . at his age I was sailing sticks down the beck out in the open air . . . he's always sailing sticks down the beck, at his age I was scavenging in a cotton mill for 14 hrs a day . . .

One of those thing to do if you really have got nothing better to do is read the history of moral panics.

The fuss about skateboards, breakdancing, and the Rubik's cube are just the recent ones I can remember of the top of my head. Crosswords were another one but longer ago.

A lot of people don't answer the phone because it's likely to be spam. Anyone you want to speak to will leave a message. Us oldies think it's rude not to answer, youngsters are more savvy and have no such hangups!

It is not just youngsters that are immersed in a virtual world.
If I have to go up to town on the train, very often I am the only one not glued to a phone, I spend most of the fifteen minute journey looking out of the window or watching my fellow travellers trying to work out where they are going, what they are going to do and just who are they. I then get distracted by a patch of light and try to record it on my phone. I often wonder if they all think I am the weird one then I remember most of them have probably not even seen me.

I stopped answering my landlines because I got sick and tired of swearing at cold callers. I am an oldy.

I think theres just always been differences.
As a kid I used to mostly stare out the window of the bus, train, car on our family journeys up and down the country. I still do.
My mates used to buried in the Beano, or "I'm bored".
Always something to look at out the window.
I'm glued to my kindle on transatlantic flights while over the ocean - if we're over land on a clear day, I'm looking out the window if I can.
I had a bit of a crazy journey back from Seattle last year involving too many planes and airports, but the run back to Bradford from London on a Flybe plane with more staff than passengers on a glorious sunny day was fantastic. England laid out below in fantastic sunlit green clarity. I never knew we had so many quarries still in operation.

Another trip, hours to kill, again Seattle, so off to the museum of flight - I could have delayed the return and come back the day after . . . Different colleague - I'd turn round to find him sat down watching a movie on his phone !

That's me being young then. If you're not on the (known callers) list then you're probably not going to get an answer. Exceptions if I'm expecting a new caller.

Yep, me too, but it took me a long time to realise that I didn't have to answer the phone 24 hours a day just because I had a phone!

True, you get hoards of couples in restaurants that barely speak a word to each other all evening , fair few eating while twiddling with the phones.
