Finally got round to unpacking the new motor for the Mellor lathe . A big lump .bigger than I thought .so new brackets are in order.
so new brackets are in order.
Making new brackets are ok. But after close examination I came up with a better idea .I will mount the new motor on a separate stand underneath .that way it's easier to do maintenance plus there will be less vibrations .Not the kind of thing a person could make?
I can not read the specification plate on the new motor
Yes. 1.1 kw. 1.5 hp. 24mm shaft. Should be good.1.1Kw as I read it.

I did wonder that earlier . Am hoping I haven't over powered it. Will find out at some point.Careful you don't strip a gear with the new torque...
Leave the belts lose, tight enough to transmit power but lose enough to slip if jammed or pushed way to far.I did wonder that earlier . Am hoping I haven't over powered it. Will find out at some point.
Will do Chris. It will be easier to set up with the motor mounted on a separate stand.Leave the belts lose, tight enough to transmit power but lose enough to slip if jammed or pushed way to far.
No the gears are not hardened. Or not to my knowledge . It should be ok. It will loose a bit through the belts.1.5hp is a BIG jump from 1/4hp. Personally I'd have maxed out at 3/4hp. Are the gears hardened?

I have put a 3/4 HP motor on the Drummond, it can just about cope with power feed and a .75mm cut (1.5mm off diameter ) without slowing much Sometimes I wish I had gone for a bit more power but not when I do some thing stupid and crash it.1.5hp is a BIG jump from 1/4hp. Lol. The Colchester will be fine. Just headstock bearings .I will sort it at some point .ok.... just hope there's not a repeat of the Colchester and chunks of metal
I understand what you mean. I thought is was a good idea at the time. If it's to much then I will swap it for something a little less.I have put a 3/4 HP motor on the Drummond, it can just about cope with power feed and a .75mm cut (1.5mm off diameter ) without slowing much Sometimes I wish I had gone for a bit more power but not when I do some thing stupid and crash it.
Cleaned the original switch panel. Really like the casting of the letters. New switch sitting flush. Just got to make a new mount bracket that bolts to the back of the panel. View attachment 132256 View attachment 132257
