Mig welding splatter?

Does it appear to have less power? If so have a look inside for a dodgy connection especially around the inductor, caps, rectifier

Apart from everything everyone else said, when you say it started happening recently, does that mean since it got cold?

Try a preheat.

No promises, but worth a shot if it's started happening since the weather cold cold.

Not the response I was hoping for, still not happy. I purchased a miller tig a few months ago but havent felt confident enoungh to start using it on my chassis yet, maybe nows the time?

The majority of Spatter is caused by having a poor balance of Voltage and Wirefeed speed.........

Either too much wire for the given voltage or too less voltage for the given wire, so adjusting one or the other up or down, should dramtically reduce Spatter levels.

Also, the Inductance will effect the amount of Spatter created on ignition.....

The design and quality of the transformer/inverter can give inherant spatter problems as the arc can be too hard, in this case it would be a charateristic of the machine and nothing can be donw...... but even so, most of the spatter should be reduced, purely from having the correct voltage/wire speed relationship.

I just wanted to add my findings, if i set up my welder for a part i need to keep an eye on my travel speed too! If i go too slow it spatters more too! (at 5 o clock in the morning when i can't keep my eyes open....)

played with all settings same as they did at the shop with no joy. My welder is probably 8 years old now but it has got to the point were i dont want to use it because of the splatter? I spend ages making sure all my joints fit and everythings clean but end up with a mess.
People will be getting fed up with me on about this.

definately argonshield universal unless the bottles labelled wrong? Have had 2 bottles and still have same problem. Using .8 wire, checked it sits in the roller all ok. Fitted new earth. Unsure of the make of wire?
When i weld on setting number 4 i get less splatter but not enough penitration.

This sounds like you are using enough power to be getting out of the dip transfer range and moving into globular. You could try a different size wire to get the required penetration, small wire on a high setting (spray transfer) or bigger wire on low (dip transfer)

It is spatter, not spaltter.

Dont forget that something as simple as a bad torch angle can cause extra spatter.

90degs to the run(butt/practice run), and pointing forward 70 degs is about right.

Hi Barry,i've read this thread a few times now but you never answered to the question about the wire feed? Does it feed smoothly or do you feel it stuttering sometimes? are your feed rollers worn out or clamped down too tight maybe? (i had the same problem lately, 'twas driving me nuts)

Wire feed seems good. I checked to make sure wire fits well in rollers and even changed the torch. Sorry to go on, people will be fed up with this thread.

Dont worry about folks gettting feed up with the thread you need an answer to the problem. If you have followed the advice given and are still getting loads of splatter, then the problem hasnt been found yet.

Barry try to get some better pics, that are more focused than the first ones you posted. If on a camera use the macro setting as its better for pics of welding

the weld beads look ok its still a little blurred, but the welds look fine. it just all that dam splatter did you try different wire?

Sorry havent quite got camera sorted. I have try a 15kg roll of wire, diferent make to the last but no joy. I had been looking at some old fabrication work I did and this just confirmed the problem
