Lots of horror stories with two strokes regardless of who did the work, ride them hard they have a habit of not been so long living. He was top kiddy back in the day!

the light that burns twice as bright ,,,, burns half as long.

things were right on the edge , cold start quick rev , seized engine in five seconds or less, oil metering lol that was a giggle ,, all common enough in the day.

Thanks for the replies to my slightly daft question, I think in my naivety I kind of assumed that if your employed to run a grinder or another high accuracy machine you really know what you’re doing. Maybe that’s not necessarily the case!

Thank you Brad, you’ve made my day with that one. My infantile mind really enjoyed your turn of phrase. I loved the picture showing how small a micron is I’ve not seen something like that before.

I suppose I wasn’t specifically asking about Will who seems to be extraordinarily talented, but I wonder whether his tiny 3 jaw chuck would pass as his ‘meesterstruck’or whether he’ll have to do better?

And everyone knows that micron’s serpent headers were the true masterpiece of the two wheel chimney world…

I know two companies that do cylindrical grinding
First one the machines sit idol after the grinding hand retired . He can find people to go .0005 true accuracy and that means dimension and concentricity and the odd one who can go .0002 but none who can go sub tenth like will . Obviously these people are out there but dying off.
He’s desperate to get Will but commute would be too much.
I know another purely grinding specialist and he’s had to get cnc studer grinders as he can’t get the men to do it.

When going to these accuracies it takes pedantic almost ocd behaviour and a certain gift.
I think it’s hard for people to grasp there’s anything special or can’t just be taught regarding a blue collar job .

I do really appreciate you dumbing it down for me it must be frustrating, I’ve never used a surface/cylindrical grinder and I did have to Google what a savant was I thought that was an Eastern European car!

What is this stuff for surely it won’t stay to size when the temperature changes?

It will be in a temperature controlled environment for example if dimensions need to be stable
Or it might be in a situation where there are many parts that fit together but are thermally symmetrical so dimension changes with temperature but fits remain constant. High pressure pumps for example

Tractor power steering valves are one such example. Take the spool out of the sleeve and hold it in your hand for a few seconds and it won't go back in.

My pal @cr500dom is having interchangeable top wheels on his machine and being completely mad I can’t trust a standard parallel for repeatability with use .
So my boy Will has ground a taper to shoulder arrangement like hsk tooling to get perfect repeatability
