Haha so 4 bar was overkill , the compressor was doing well though!! , what you reckon to the pics? Could it have been un "thinned" paint at the bottom of the cup?
Ok point noted Still worried about these blobs, also... Between coats, so you just paint over the inevitable overspray that settles (like dust) as you only have 5-10mins between the coats......
look like paint is not mixed with thinners.
on the car start by spraying in all the nocks and crannies, like the headlight areas that will not get a direct coat on normal passes, window return area, door handle.let that dry 10 mins or so.get up so as you can spray roof, start at the roof near you ,work to the middle.round opposite side fast, pick up wet roof and work back to your self.
down one side that you are on,do the bonnet same was, edge to centre ,centre to edge,
down that side. then tailgate last.
also bear in mind that by the time you get right round the car,you will be ok to start on second coat.
the way i do it is,first coat light, dont try coat get full colour, then a wet coat, right after i get that coat on,do another wet coat.thats called "wet on wet"
and don't get over spray as is blends into the wet paint.
make sense??
Just Spray it ..... wait 5 mins so still wet then spray again onto wet paint....
I was waiting far too long i think...... Cant wait to have another go, im not bothered about flatting it back, i quite enjoy it, and these AFS sanders are effing awesome!! Haha.
Thanks so much for the advice, good advice is hard to come by!!!!
yep just dry enough, that if you touch it with the back of your finger it dont stick/pick up paint, but the back .finger tips carry too much oil/grease.
do that light first coat, that will be see through, get coverage with 2nd& 3rd coats.
a tale, i used too know a guy.all he sprayed wa orangepeel,he did'nt care. used to flat it down and polish it up.
it worked for him.
i see, i will do that then, i think i was waiting too long also....
I dont mind, i love the learning curve, and learning from mistakes makes sure you dont do it again, just cleared some leave off work for thew back end of june, hopefully i'll have a few panels prepped and ready for the top coat by then.... and i'll have a week to get it sorted, i just want my setup done and dusted (sorry for the pun) by then.
The plan.
Flat panel with 600 (maybe use a guide co
2 Bar (30Psi)
Adjust Fluid correctly
Adjust Fan Correctly
Check atomisation
Use a Paint mixing container
Use 50/40 mix of paint to thinners
Dont allow too long inbetween coats
Pray it works.....
i put the panel in my car all day today, and it will be there till friday, boy its hot in there!!!! Should get it bone dry!!!
well the drip is hardening up!!! Too right jaykay about leaving it to dry, the drip is still a bit soft!
Cant wait till friday, might be tempted to wetsand and buff "just to See" if i get a goot finish. Then i will sand with 600 to get the colour coat application process right!!!!
lambs wool bonnet is better, but 3m works.just go very easy, moreso on the edges.or you'll burn through and be in tears. use a spray bottle out of the kitchen to keep it wet.
before i put another couple of coats of red on i decided to have a go flatting the awful finish i had before and polishing,
it went well using the green pad and fast cut plus then fine cut compound with the yellow pad, all 3m stuff,
i am i bit worried i can see a couple of the 600 grit sanding marks.......
We will see how this next coating sands and polishes out, speaking of the next coating.....
I got some mixing containers and mixed the paint to the correct measurements (100-70)
Then i sivved (is that a word?) the paint with some starchem paint strainers...
This was after trying to get rid of the imperfections the blobs in the paint caused, as they actually pulled the paint off down to the primer when some of them were sanded out, however, after flatting with 320 on a da then guide coating and 600 on a block i was ready,
adjusted for 2bar with trigger pulled, setup the best i could as i was more or less spraying in the dark (this will be sorted for next time)
And away i went, put 3 coats down (I know i have 6 coats now, but i sanded at least 2 coats off when flatting) as i got carried away, and it is pretty flat!!!!!!!
100% better than before, still need to get the gun setup spot on, seems to be coming out a bit thin, but i am happy and will get pics up in the week.
And thanks jaykay for the info, it really has helped.
the"blobs" are very likely paint was'nt mixed enough, dont worry now.
when you wet flat, you do put washing up licquid in your water, dont you??
it gives slip and stops the pick up of the paint.
sounds like your winning.
I didnt know you could use washing up liquid, sounds a lot better than soap! I'll do that!!!
I didnt use soap yesterday because i didnt have any... maybe thats what caused the light scratches after polishing??? I hope so, we will see on weds/thurs......
grr, the waiting is torture.... the next panel..... a big fat flat VW mk1 bonnet, mmmmmmmm, and its got a ding, grrrrrrrr.
I honestly think that no amount of reading makes up for practice like you say, however, if i hadnt of read up, i would of made 1000 more mistakes, Ive spent about 6 months reading up on this haha!
can you get to the back of the ding???
if so get a wallpaper roller, you know the little one with a wheel about 1 1/2"
put your hand on the ding top side and roller the back firmly, should be able to get most of it out.
