Modifying a 3D scan.

From what I can read in your scanner manual, it outputs a .ply file (it will be about 2440 x 1220 x 18).

There is a mesh workbench in FreeCAD: https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Mesh_Workbench

It looks like you import your ply there, trim off what you do not want (see 'cutting' in link above), and resave. If the corners stay the same and it just needs to be narrower or shorter or both, you'd need to create two halves (four quarters) as separate files, then boolean them back together into one piece.

Put it into sketchup
Convert to mesh.
Split the bodies and then minimise the width.

I'll take a look at it if you like but even though I have meshmixer installed I've never actually used it.

That would be so easy to model from scratch using the scan as a guide. If the sides are straight I'd go for a tapered extrude (or may be loft), if they are curved or bulged I'd got for an extrude along path.

This was 10mins with F360 just to show what can be achieved. It's by no means to scale or accurate, but if you want something more custom this would be the way to go, you'd start by scanning the area the item needs to fit then model a shroud to fit.

A radius gauge and calipers are a lot easier to work from in my experience. The beauty of 3D printing is if it takes a couple of iterations to get It just right that’s fine.

Even a photo, calibrated to the right size, will do.

That is just amazing and far beyond my capabilities! How do you feel about creating the design for some beer tokens? I have my own car and a customer's car that needs them. They will be slightly different as it is a non standard installation.

How proficient are you at F360? It really is quite simple - you need to be able to sketch and extrude and a bit of form manipulation (you may not have done that but I can show you)

I have a copy and have tried it out. Then abandoned it in favour of a simpler learning curve like learning Swahili.


I use Design Spark Mechanical which is the only one that seemed to make sense to me and is what I did the image in post number one with.
