I trap in hay fields and prefer the Talpex scissor style traps. There are lots of poor copies around, it’s worth paying a few quid more for genuine Talpex - well made and galvanized to last a lifetime (that’s if if you can remember where you set them ! I always push in a marker stick alongside with a couple of turns of blue electricians tape).
Don’t worry about finding too straight a length of tunnel, the critical thing is cut out a section of sod that is no longer than the trap. Keeping it a snug fit means the mole can not bypass the jaws as it comes through the hole.
