you could always go Magura hydraulic rim brake

Got those on my trials bike, once I'd bled them, machined a new master piston, bled them again, helicoiled the mounts, bled them some more then finally spotted the hose had a leak, they work incredibly. On a dry, ground rim I'd say they're more powerful than disc brakes!

I've got a pair of cable calipers in my shed make me an offer, cant remember the make but they came on my Marin Four Corners, worked ok but I went mad and bought semi hydro brakes.
Maguras are great on my recumbent thay have lasted 15 years.
Dont go fitting braze ons to these ols deek frames it would ruin the heat treatment process. Pics in a moment. Just dont laugh.
it is brutally weather proofed 20 miles a day all ueat round on claggy country lanes and 3ft of water when the Wye goes mad every few weeks.

As I said it's had a hard life, almost all on road but big miles. Takes proper wheels, I think the wheels are fine.

Home made mountain bike, build was documented on here about 10 years ago, mercifully still in one piece.

Down hill bike that always wants to hurt me.

I think your right that there better than discs

I was careful not to say better. They can't match the control or the wet performance of discs, and I'd be wary of using them on expensive rims. Tonnes of stopping power though, they're leaps and bounds ahead of cable rim brakes too.

I will say mine worked in the wet fine and my rims were always trials rims. I did run a set for a few months on my big standard specialized with no issues

Just back from LBS to get refund for some tyres (he does buy one, get one half-price on all tyres - that makes him better than most places online!) that I've had on order for over several weeks - I decided to cancel as in the meantime I'd bought another bike.

Anyways, he deals in Marin, Orange, Orbea, Dawes and a few others including children's bikes. He says that getting hold of a bike for an average sized adult in the £1k price range was now nigh-on impossible; but he might be able to if you're very short - or very tall! Most of the manufacturer's are not holding off on releasing their 2021 bikes, normally released around now, until the end of the year and are continiuing manufacture of existing range past the time they'd normally cease; no bike shows means distributors and dealers don't know what to order in as they can't view/test the range.

Oh, also told me that the local LR dealership isn't reopening... staff supposedly found out when a friend of one pointed out that the lease on the building was being advertised!

I had a 2005 Kona Dawg before the Cube, similar to this:

I used to like the oldschool conventional hardtail-with-suspension look of these, now looks a bit awkward somehow and the pedal bob was never great, even with pro-pedal shock.

I never understood why some people hated Kona's frames because the frame had some of the best welds I've still ever seen.

Ditto Cannondale and their welds. Have you heard of Nicolai bikes? They've always exagerrated the 'stacked dime' welding on their frames.

Funny you should mention Cannondale. A few months ago I persuaded OH to get a new bike after I bought my £30 ebay Dawes. Rutland Cycles had the Cannondale Quick 7 hybrid for £240. It seemed great value so we ordered one without even trying one in a shop. OH loves it but we couldn't believe the quality of the frame welds compared to other bikes we had looked at that were £100 more. Really beautifully put together.

oh wow! Gorgeous welding, even if its a bit exaggerated!

My dream bike list is mostly carbon now, but there's something functionally pleasing about alloy welds.

Dream bike is a Yeti SB6c, i LOVE their rear triangle design, it looks so simple and elegant!

Runners up include Evil Following and a Santa Cruz Bronson. Actually I'll have them all.
And also a couple of hardtails... an Orange and a Cotic maybe... and what else...

If this thread is still going when I'm home I'll take a picture of my trials bike, that's got the massive 'Instagram' welds, I'm honestly not a big fan of it. Nice subtle welds on a steel frame do it for me.

But if someone were to come out with a lug brazed aggressive hardtail, that would no doubt take the top spot.
