That reminds me, years ago I worked in double glazing, and in the factory if any one got cut the first aid guy would clean it with thinners (that was what everyone called it) which was used to clean the glass before the 2 pieces of glass were joined together by hand. And did that sting!!!

Speaking of glass, have a look at this pair of goons i snapped today from our site sticking film over a smashed pane of glass. Judging by the extent of the dents to the top of the van, this is their regular method of high-level access.
HSE's office is just round the corner.....

We have had oil filled Current transformers in power station switchyards fail in the past. Apparently there was a known defect with some of them, and they would fail with little warning. Now these CT’s are about 4ft across at the basement, and maybe 5ft high, oil filled, and the outside is porcelain. They don’t actually just let a little bit of smoke out & go “pop”. They send fist-sized chunks of porcelain for about 100 meters from their location, but I don’t believe anyone was ever injured, and we had about 5 or 10 of them fail in such a manner.

We have similar oil filled transformers around here, fitted in old wooden towers. The boss at my old job said they are the best, cause they demolish themselves. Usually before you upgrade a transformer (which we try to avoid and put off as long as possible as it's a pain in the **** and costs the company a lot of money) you run it a bit over spec, just while you sort everything out. Well, these old transformers are usually so corroded that they can't take that, they overheat and explode, spraying burning oil all over the place. Tower is usually gone withing minutes.

But the nice part is that it's so much easier for us, just level the ground, add a bit of gravel and get a new park transformer in by lorry, lift into place, hook up the cables and bish-bash you're set to go. Also saves us the need to pay workers for doing during the night and sending out memos about the power cut. And we can take our time doing it properly as people are just grateful to get their power back...

Here's one, albeit rather old.
Sparkey's comment about burnmarks reminded me.

My old dad. About 1949, a couple of years before I was born I might add.
He was a "pipefitter and boiler maker" according to his papers.

I used to wonder why his arms, head and face had lots of little blue marks in them.
One day, I asked my mum.
He used to work for Btiggs Motor Bodies in Dagenham, before Ford took them over.
One time he was part of a team taking out some redundant plant, which included some big storage cylinders. Another team were supposed to be decomissioning and cleaning up residues.
He was tasked with cutting up a gas storage tank. Must have been pretty big as I understand he was up a ladder with the oxy-acetylene torch. As the torch penetrates the tank......BANG !!!

Result = two broken legs, no hair, all exposed skin peppered with bits of tank. Hence all the blue flecks in his skin.

These days, I dare say a bit of legal action would see you comfortably retired on the basis of employers liabilities, he soldiered on for another 16 years.

Reminds me of my granddad, used to get a bit sad every time his electric razors gave up on him, he had grenade fragments embedded in his face from the war which the razor was no match for.

He was also a professional welder, but a very careful one, I've never heard of him getting any serious injuries from work, except worn out knees and lung cancer, dunno if that was from the welding fumes and related crap or smoking though.

many moons ago as a dumb 15yr old apprentice I thought I had killed myself....or at least gone blind. I went to work one morning, December in the northeast is not exactly balmy...anyway we used to have an old Salamander (The older contingent will know what I mean) heater in the middle of workshop which we used for obvious reasons, the tank at the bottom of the flue held 25ltrs of diesel fuel, anyway one of the fitters had gone up the quarry to bring a dumper (Euclid Type) in for repair, heater had gone out so dumbass me thinks ..right we'll have that going again, grabs a hand full of newspaper, twists it up and fired er up...kicks the filler cap open, stuffs the twisty into it and .......... come too against the workshop wall with people around me asking me what happened and me smelling rather well done all down one side....me not thinking.. or knowing about the hot diesel vapor's in the tank had just fired up said vapor....big mistake...all the right side of my face and right arm were quite badly flashburnt, not to mention the lopsided hair style....needless to say I never repeated the experience.

A domestic rather than work related incident. Moved into a brand new house and found the only way to dig the compacted earth in the garden was to use a pick axe. I'm merrily swinging this thing and then all of a sudden swing it hook it over the new linen line I had just put up. Linen line acts like elastic and chucks the thing straight back. Pickaxe handle hits me in the face and my jaws jam shut with such force I crack my two front teeth. After taking a few seconds to check I wasn't mortally wounded, my wife (who found me staggering around the garden concussed and dazed) practically wets herself laughing at me.

I love this thread for many reasons, but principally to keep top of mind when attempting something foolish.

Anyway, my contribution: A friend who works as a theatre nurse in the weekends quite often deals with plastic surgery cases. They had one bloke who came in with terrible cuts to his hands. The cause: Decided to use his rotary mower to trim his hedge by holding it up to the hedge with predictable consequences.

Later on that weekend, they had a similar guy come in with similar injuries. It turns out this guy had been driving past the first bloke, saw him 'mowing' his hedge and thought it looked like a good idea... Obviously he passed by before the first bloke had suffered his injuries.

Today i had a new set of wirefeed rollers placed in my kit at work.....before he took the old ones out the maintenance guy wanted to test the wirefeed by wrapping the wire around his hand.....oh you can feel thisone coming....
He stepped back and bumped into my jig with his hand, the wire earthed and went glowing red!!!!!

Blimey...i could SMELL him burn his hand!!

Nooo! there were no occupations left for floorsweeper, so they'd let him stay on maintenance....
We're not allowed to smoke inside the plant anymore.....that is really the most stupid law ever invented!!You can breathe in welding fumes and other crap all day, but you can't light a fag...

Nah...i like the smell of bacon better than human flesh burning.....beeurk!

Well on Sunday we were trimming back some of the large leylandii trees at our house, my dad got hit by a falling branch, was in a lot of pain, couldn't stand up, looked like he was about to faint. Ambulance called etc and on getting him x rayed turned out he had broken a couple of bones around his knee.
He had an op putting pins in his leg on monday, he's been in hospital all week, hoping to get him out on monday
