talking about Family Jewels i know some one who was welding on a hot day with his overall open squatted on the floor, and as he finished a nice large piece of dross drop from the weld pool down his overalls and it stoped on his Family Jewels so his partner wasnt happy for a few weeks.


and as for a big injuries, when i was working at my larst place there was a GO on the roof(big concreet tanks 120ft high with scafolding around the top about 15ft down from the rim) he was sweeping up near a large power cable, (415V and about 128A 2" thick) and the siverials on the roof had moved this cable and only used some thin wire to hold it in place, and this had all the waight of the cable on it since it was going to the floor.
and the poor GO acidentilly taped the cable with his broom and hen it just went, so he poot his foot on it and then it took him off the roof on to the scafolding. he was very lucky he is still alive, we found out he had a mupile compound open fractures in his leg (it was a mess) and he is lucky that the sergens could pu it back together

make do and mend or ignored

I guess that most of the members collect old " serviceable gear " to make the little comforts of their workspace a wee bit more comfortable .

My tale is a bit of a warning to make sure everything is 100% safe not just thought to be safe.


I used to work in British Telecom as one of the guys who had so many different jobs and redeployments in the company that I became part of the reduction of worker programme .
I never had a specific office or desk and did what is known as hot desking from just North of London across to Liverpool and over to the Humber by Hull.

Safety in BT was supposed to be 100% so when one day i went into a big BT towerblock to access a computer terminal I had no inkling of what was to come .

Found a hot desk terminal in a really dolly bird office ... MMMMm nice smells and several good lookers .. I started crunching data into the computer terminal and after 3/4 hr or so I'm already hack off with the sheer mind boggling numbingness of it so I decide to leg it to the big outside and gather a bit more data.

As I pushed back from the desk , the chair back gave way and I fell back trapping my legs under the heavy desk , banged my head on the floor as the chair back had dropped parallel to it and at the same time ruptured three lower discs at the back of my spine .

It felt like a red hot poker wrapped in barbed wire had been shoved up my jacksie , I was screaming like a banshee so I'm told , somehow I then managed to pull myself up from the flat back position using my legs and stomach muscles, I now ruptured two discs at the front of my spine.

I'm now medically unemployable and on a BT pension, no more operations can repair the damage nor can they stop the pain in the damaged spinal nerves or the incontinence problems that I occasionally get .

At the subsequent safety enquiry it was found that almost everyone in the office had known that the chair back retaining mech. was faulty and that because of buget restraints it was not replaced.
It was also discovered that it had been hidden in a cupboard when the annual safety check for chairs were made because it was also known that there was no gas safety strut to control the rearwards movement of the back rest. No one had the nous to tape a danger notice the chair etc. not even the floor safety rep.

Yep I'm well & truly shafted and on a pension but I'd rather have been able to carry on working for this last 15 years .. ( I'm 60 next year ).

So my warning to you all is, no matter what gear you think is safe be it brand new or used , if it has moving parts for your own personal safety check it out .
I'm sure lots of you have " RESCUED " chairs , stools & filing cabinets in your workshops.
Same with second hand electrical & welding gear etc. get it checked out or you could be infor an unhappy /shocking experience.

If things come out the skip then think why have they been chucked there and give then a reall good looking over .

I would not wish this spinal injury or its consequences on anyone ... not even Tony Blair / Gordon Brown or Peter Mandelson.


4 drawer Filing cabinets ...
I saw a gal get well and truly flattened because she fully opened the top two drawers .. and it fell forward on her .

The top two drawers were stuffed with order & receipt books , the bottom tqo drawers were nigh on empty. There was no mechinism in the cabinets that would only allow one drawer to be opened at a time .. if you have any such cabinets bung the heavy stuff in the bottom drawers and bolt the cabinets to the wall if at all possible.

We got a bloke at work who had two of his fingers chopped off somehow, we call him " Roger no fingers"
And guess what he's the Health & Safety rep

That story reminds me of a place I worked at. A guy left a 9" angle grinder with a broken disc lying around. Luckily the bloke who used it next noticed before he started it up.

It would have taken the first chap less than a minute to discard the old disk.

Lad over the way from us got himself a hospital trip the other day. They are a printing outfit and seemingly have a large guillotine for chopping 3" of paper in one go.

He was busying himself cleaning the blades so set the machine to cut, but jammed a 2" square bit of wood between the bed and the blade to get the blade to show itself. Hes part way through cleaning when the blade snips the bit of wood in half and off goes the end of his finger.

'Parrently the hold-down clamp came down as well mashing the stump up so it couldnt all be welded back together at the hospital.

Right mess round the guilly.

I managed a minor one today, although not "work related"

Was uncorking a small demijohn and the bung came out all of a sudden and up went my left hand into a fluorescent lamp under the kitchen cupboard...
I thought I'd just ripped the skin off but on closer inspection I could see some "white fatty bits", then the tendon , this all whilst blood was pouring out...

A quick trip to A&E and it would seem I'd not only ripped my knuckle open but sliced the "tendon sheath" to bits too...

The doc said I was very lucky I'd not cut the tendon and to be fair was amazed I hadn't...
Two or three dissolving stitches inside and four outside and I've been told it should be "ok" in a week

On the way out I was told I was extremely lucky, and "I hope the wines worth it"

i once set fire to my jumper grinding an in 2007 i tripped while carrying my hedge cutter rake an step ladder the handle of the hedge cutter caught me in the groin an i ended up with a hernia had the op jan last year not something id recomend particuallarly with the "risk of damageing the blood supply ...... but dont worry your nuts ull just shrink " dont worry dont worry easy to say that when it aint ur nuts aint it dont like doctors first one i saw said just live with it im only 24 so didnt much fancy haveing summut the size of a tennis ball down there for the rest of me life

today i managed to hit me hand twice with a mallet while laying paveing

My bro (a H&S Consultant for Atkins Global ) has had a few mishaps... his Suzi Bandit 1200 spat him off after he hit a pothole at warp speed, two fingers punched into the side of the tank and won't straighten anymore. So he can't rock-climb like he used to.

Then he was doing something that involved a piece of metal and a double-ended 6" bench grinder. So intent was he on the workpiece that he forgot about the grinding wheel on the other end until it grabbed his arm and took a chunk out of it - actually wedged the flesh between the wheel and the toolrest until it wore through

Then his son got into skateboarding so bro decided that as he had to ferry the lad everywhere, he may as well give it a go. Now he's not totally stupid, so he had all the proper kit, helmet, kneepads, elbow pads etc. and for several months everything was hunky-dory.
Then one day at Redcar he was playing on some half-pipe or whatever skater-dudes call a plywood ramp ... 'getting some air' and suchlike. Next thing, the board went one way, he went the other and had to fall about 5 feet vertically to the bottom of the ramp. Not a problem, he had all the safety gear on... except that when he landed on his knees he'd crossed his legs and then sat down on them, snapping one tib and fib over the other.
So all the kiddos are standing around laughing and jeering... come on grandad, get out of the way.
No can do, says bro, I've broken me leg.
Of course they didn't believe him until he rolled over and half his leg stayed put.. cue much retching over the barriers

Bad start to the Bank holiday weekend. My youngest son Liam fell out of a tree last night Friday and ended up in A&E luckily only slight soft tissue damage but you can see from the markings he was lucky to get of with only that. He is feeling rather sorry for himself today but hopefully he will feel at home tomorrow Sunday as we are off to the Earlston rugby seven's so he will not be the onlyone with a cracking shiner!

He is a wee nutter likes showing off in front of the girls, he has a permanent reminder from January the night we had the heaviest snow fall. He was fooling about with his brother and hit the corner of the kitchen chair and split the eyelid open the only good thing about that was no one was on the road and no one was at A&E the air recue helicopter was stranded at the hospital as well so 1 1/2 hours to the hospital and back.
