when i was about 14 if memory serves i built a trike out of a couple of grifters, i had a little stick plant about the size of a shoe box, it would burn a rod and a half(1mm) then shut off and youd have to wait ten mins till it cooled down,

anyway i had just finnished welding in a gusset to brace the frame and my dad arrived to inspect the work.

he crouched down next to me to have a look at the welding and shot straight back up with a lot of expleatives,

turns out i had sat the torch down and the rod was pointing upwords, well you can imagine the red hot tip of a 1mm rod going where the sun dont shine.

still make my cheeks tighten...

I was cutting the top of a hedge with a hedge trimmer at work, went to go down the ladder and caught my thumb in the blades that had over-run. It was a bloody mess and my thumb was not attached to my hand no more.....10 weeks off work and a lot of physio, but its all ok now, got all the feeling back, numbness went away and i.ve got full movement back.

Doing something to a birds Alfacrud, She stood next to me and talked for a few mins' and then sat in the car and talked to herself, by now I am have put the alternator back and looped the belt on. She decides to start the car! Made a bit of a mess of the top of one of my fingers, I wrapped it in masking tape and carried on, it healed up fine. The tip of my finger points away at a funny angle now;-)

Not quite as maiming / lairy as some of the others on here but general stupidity and not wanting to listen to my old man, lead to me tightening up the engine mounts on my old turbo mini (through the nearside wheelarch) using a 12" long 3/8 extension, he told me that it would slip off and i didn't listen, then the socket slipped off and my wrist impaled itself on the wheelarch which had just been cut with an angle grinder ready for the big wheels. This caused a gash deep enough to turn my mate white and for my dad to call me an idiot and tell me why i was wrong doing it as i was lol. 8 seuchers later and good as new.
I also slipped down the stairs when we were having the carpets done in the house and as i slip down 2-3 steps on the nail type carpet grippers some profanities were screamed then looked at my foot (No shoes on) to find about 15 x few mm deep cuts front to back heel to toe. Needless to say i had a limp for a day or two.

'S funny reading these stories and wanting to join in, but all I have is one scar about the size of 1/2 a 10p piece from sliding my hand along the edge of a s/s commercial rangehood I was picking up from the auctions for my wife's new cafe. So when she warns me to be careful in the workshop, I just show her the scar on my hand...

Saw my life fash before my eyes a couple of days ago, whilst driving along the narrow country lanes we have around here, a builders truck came towards me, we both moved over a little for each other.
And just literally as the bumpers got level I noticed the lump of 6x10 timber coming out from the side of the cab at an angle at head height by a foot, managed to find the extra bit of room in the hedge thankfully.

It was not till afterwards the ramifications of this dawned on me, if I had not seen this, it could have been through the windscreen and embedded in my head.

Oh and yesterday morning the moron who tried to overtake the tractor directly in my path must have had a brown trouser incident, cos all he must have seen was the front of a disco and the green oval, he didnt half pull in quick.

So twice in two days, does this mean my time is near??!!!!

I had an accident at work a few years ago, A guy that started the day before was driving the fork lift truck. I was helping out in the finishing area on the crack detection machine, i was under the covers working on the carousel. This guy reverses the truck into a full work bin but doesnt stop, pushing it through the covers and pinning me between the bin and carousel. An ambulance had to be called and while i was in A+E i found out that although the management was supposed to check he had a fork lift license before allowing him on there, they hadnt checked and he hadnt got a license at all.

my stories are no where near some of the ones on this thread but over my lifetime of tinkering with electrical kit ive managed to accumalate at least 4 240 volt shocks my first was when i was around 3 - 4 the next three were all within a few years / months of each other.

my worst shock was from the HT coil on the back of an old CRT 21" telly i was dismantling. at the time i had no idea tv's could store a charge for any period of time so i went to remove the HT lead from the back of the tv with my fingers(telly was switched off but had been on about 10 mins earlier). as you can guess the HT coil on the tv and its associated capacitors discharged through my body, a confused look and some swearing later i realised never to-do that again...

and the last time i managed to get a nasty shock off kit was when i was asked to help my friend repair an old off road bike that would not start, the wiring had been chewed up and needed some TLC to get the bike to give a spark again, whilst brushing against a wire i did not spot my friend cranked the bike over to test for spark... no spark mainly becuase it was busy shocking the life out of my arm and again making me swear as it happened. oddly my friend found this highly ammusing

hopefully im never going to need to post on here about any grinder or welding related accidents.

Last weekend I managed to fracture the bone in the end of my forefinger, under the nail, with a rubber mallet whilst laying paving blocks, it hurt then and still hurts now.

Years ago I was driving a 10 tonne fully laden lorry into the workshops to do repairs...
It was a rainy day and the whole area in and out was greasy cobbles.

My mate Topper was sat at the desk at the end of the workshop bay .. he got up just in the nick of time to put the kettle on as I braked , pulled on the hand brake & started to depress the clutch to take it out of 2ndfirst gear .

My damp greasy boot sole slipped off the metal face of the clutch pedal , the truck surged forward the last four feet .. crushed the table and chair that Topper had been sitting at .


We made it mandatory that the whole floor was dusted with spill sorb every Friday afternoon and that when ever it rained we had to use roll blue wide **** to wipe our feet whilst sat in any truck coming into the workshop before starting up .

It certainly made me much more safety consious and willing to look for possible hazards around me.

I work on the railway and one of the old boys that retired recently told me a story to make any man cry, he was working the levers of an old signal box, as he walked across the lever frame he slipped and somehow managed to land on one of ther lever handles, thinking it had only gone through his trousers he tried to free himself untill he realised it'd actually gone through his ball bag !! This was before mobiles and obviously not being able to reach the phone he had to scream until a shunter heard him . . . . Ouch !!
He apparently came back to work the next day . . they don't make them like they used to

Not sure how true this is, as I heard it when I was a lot younger.
A footballer dislocated his leg while playing, they stretchered him off to the sidelines and attempted to relocate his leg. As the leg went back in to place he started screaming more, so they took him to hospital. When they scanned him, they found that they had trapped a testicle while relocating the joint.

Made me wince a bit, whether its true or not.

He used to say, before you leave home, or go to a job, use your checklist:

- Spectacles
- Testicles
- Wallet and watch.

That reminded me of a scrambler who dislocated his shoulder, we put him in the ambulance (St. John) started down the (rough) track to take him to hospital when a pothole bounced the ambulance his shoulder "popped" back in!.
Took him back to the pits and had to fill in the report as a ½ casualty

I used to work in flexographic printing, was running the 8 colour print press one day, on a job which i HATED!
It was a yellow label, so one colour, very easy.
Started to get a blemish appear on the web, so i slowed press down to 100 meters per minute (which is normal), started cleaning the anilox and impression rollers with a rag which is also normal.
Felt a nip, then a tug. Pulled on finger then realised the extent of the damage.

Lost the nail, nail bed, finger pad, skin, flesh, nerve endings. The lot!
