The bro inlaw won his court case and got £26,00 plus costs 3 yrs later on the steps of the high court.

He said to me he was cleaning the moving rollers off ..don't know if the same applies in your press but it did make me think that a swab stick system should be employed instead of bare hands holding cloths /rags on close gapped moving rollers .

Had there been some tensioned wire trip switch and brake system at the rollers perhaps he'd still have his hand.

Wow, Wish I got that amount! I got £3k 3 years later.. Pretty pathetic in my opinion as I was out of work for 8 months with it!
I think it would again be very very hard to use an swab system, as you may know that Anilox's are full of microscopic honeycomb structures, these are like little buckets which *fill* with ink. They need a damn good scrub to get all the ink out of these little buckets, so you'd be standing there forever trying to get the ink out!

I do think there should be some kind of clutch mech though, thats attached to some wire which is then hooked to a pedal at the back of the press or where ever the ink stations are located, this way if you get into any chit, just jam ya foot onto the pedal, will disengage the clutch or trip the machine out!

OOOhh also seen a guy commit suicide by throwing himself infront of a London Underground Train. (Kings Cross, A60 Stock, Metropolitan Line)

Thought I'll revive this thread.

Last summer one of the local power companies had a nasty accident, they were repairing a 20kV line from a skylift. The procedure is to open the switches for that line, visually inspect the switch to ensure that it's not welded from lightning damage or overloading, check the line with a meter to ensure that it's dead, and then apply grounding cables to the line to ground any residual induction (3x230VAC can give as much as 100VAC induction voltage in a dead phase, so imagine what can happen on a 3x20kVAC line). Well, the old timers at that company were a bit lazy/too seasoned, and just threw the breaker open and went to work. The line was damaged from lightning, so one might have suspected the breaker to be welded through and through, which it was. Anyway, the guy went to work in the skylift, and the other workers didn't notice something was wrong until he stopped moving for half a minute while clutching the live 20kV line in his hand. Next thing they know, the guy and lift is ablaze, and they can't do anything as the skylift was mounted on a lorry and the live line was grounding through the guy and the whole skylift and lorry. The lorry had a ground isolator between the lift and bed, but they were only an inch thick and dimensioned for 380VAC, so the 20kV jumped that easily. Anyhow, all the guys on the ground could do was to wait until the fire destroyed the hydraulic lines enough to get the lift to sag and pull the guy free of the line. That took about half an hour. The guy that tried to give him mouth-to-mouth after that said that it was like blowing into a plastic shopping bag. Anyhow, miraculously, the lorry worked fine after a bit of a hose-down and some new hydraulics, and it's a 2008 Merc Uni-Mog, one could have thought that that much current and voltage through the chassis would fry the living daylight out of the circuitry.

Another nasty accident that happened to one of the workers here was a couple decades ago, a worker though he would put in some overtime and get the new hydro-electrical plant finished, so he went to fit the pole caps to the new transformer for this 7,5 MW power plant. The caps go on top of the poles for the 20kV feed to the grid to stop birds shorting two poles and frying themselves. Anyhow, he did everything by the book, and got the job done and went to close the breakers between the transformer and the grid. Shortly after when he was packing up to go home (this was 8 Pm in the middle of the forest) he remembered that he had forgot a bit of his kit on top of the transformer. He thought that why bother turning of the power, he's only retrieving a couple of spanners, and climbed up there to get them. He had forgotten a small bit of info, 210kV is more than cable to arc up to half a meter to anything that's close enough to ground potential, and he was literately fried up there on the transformer. The old timers here say that pieces of his T-shirt is still burnt into the paint on the back-side of the transformer.

Can't quite match that for nastiness but do have a couple of personal unpleasant incidents to relate.
Couple of years ago I was helping a mate in his workshop, working on an MR2. It was up on a 2 post lift and he was having trouble popping the rear upright back onto the lower wishbone ball joint. He was leavering it down with a 1" diameter, 1.2 mtr pry bar and he asked me to lever the upright into position. As I walked under the car to get into position the prybar slipped and smacked me right on the top of my head. I went down like a sack of dropped spuds !
I never actually lost consciousness fully but I was looking down a grey tunnel and the claret was running all down my face. He totally panicked and had it not been for a young female customer who was hanging about at the time he probably would have passed out before calling an ambulance. She called 999 and they arrived in about 10 mins and took me to hospital. Fortunately there was no serious damage, just a large cut right on top of my head and a neat crescent shaped dent in the skull. I felt strange for a few weeks though. Still have a lump there to remind me.
Another time years ago, I was working under my car of the time and was trying to loosen something in the vicinity of a rear disc assembly. So, I slipped, and my wrist was gouged by the edge of the splash shield on the back of the disc. It went really deep and just into the artery, I just couldn't stop the blood gushing though ! Shot into the house and scared the daylights out of the GF and asked her to call an ambulance before I bled to death ! She said muck that, we're going in her car. So she shut the house and garage up and we were off.
Got to casualty and they were going through the normal booking in procedure while I stood there with a blood soaked towel dripping on the floor bleeding to death !! Fortunately a switched on doc spotted the amount of blood and put me straight into an emergency room. Although I wasn't in immediate danger the artery needed stitches as well as the wound and I had to have a shot in the **** against infection.
Strangely though, it didn't seem to hurt that much !

I remember back at secondary school while trying to finish a school metal work project at home, trying to do some brazing. I was a gas torch connected by a hose to a dumpy little bottle about 18" high, Shell gas or similar. After admitting defeat and tidying up I managed to knock the gas bottle of the bench, which immediately broke the cast valve off the top. I got very exciting with this very loud white plume of gas/liquid squirting out of the bottle, all the doors were shut and Dads car was parked almost touching the up and over door, only the small side door offered and exit. Only between it and me was this excited gas bottle, I decided to let it vent a bit first, not knowing at the time what Butane inhalation does, so bottle went flat, I got high.
I left the garage, sat on the seat outside, and decided to have a fag (can you see where I’m going here). Gets fag out, lights with match, throws match to floor, then after a slight delay there is this Whoooomph noise a dull flame and the corrugated roof panels lifted off.
Dad comes out, I'm smoking bad boy, slightly spaced, and have blown the roof off the garage and broken his gas torch.

your supposed to have a proper unit fitted that has the required earth link and prevents the mains and generator on at the same time but yes throw the main switch

nope i'm memory serves under the supply and continuity regs (regs for the suppliers and user) if you are found using a generator in a way that can be connected to the grid they can disconnect you with a big cost to reconnect

Here in Finland most setups I've seen were rigged in a manner that between the incoming line from the grid and the board they've set up an removable power cable, so when the lights go they just pull out the cable from the grid and plug in the generator.

they have that for if the board what to put in a generator but the board over hear seam quite happy to leave houses without power for a couple of days so a few people who have there own portable generator start plugging them in

I started my working life in foundries starting off in the fettling shop. There I witnessed some horrific accidents over the years, so here goes:-

We used to cast large engine blocks 20 ton plus. The grinding tools were all high frequency equiptment, which for those of you who dont know are nearly impossible to slowdown under pressure. One time there where a couple of contract fettlers brought in who where used to using 110v grinders (toys!). They set upon a large engine block with our tools and were getting on fine. The straight grinders which we used ran at 2 different speeds 6000rpm and 18000rpm. The slower would take a grinding disc the faster large stone wheels. None of them had gaurds as they where used in the engine bores which acted as a gaurd and were only ever started in the bore hole. Along comes one of the contractors and see's what we were doing and decided to pick up one of the straight grinders (a fast one) and fit a 9" cutting disc to it. Turns it on outside of the casting where it immediatley shatters blinding his mate in one eye and cutting his bottom jaw almost completely off.
Another act of stupidity which happend at the foundry this time in the casting shed. Because of the size of the castings we done they where not moulded in boxes like most foundries but in huge pits in the ground. One sunny summers day ther was a huge explosion in the foundry, everything went dark as it shook all the dust from the ceiling girders, you couldnt see your own hands infront of your head. Everyone ran to the casting shed to see what had happend but what I saw i never expected. Cast iron everywhere, all up the walls and ceiling, covering the crane cab (with a very brown trousered driver stil inside) and all over the floor. Pretty much everywhere. Turns out some one had thrown a half empty can of coke on the floor and it had fallen down one of the riser holes into one of the moulds. When they poured in the metal (a 12 ton ladle full in this case) it instantly turned to steam and blew the molten metal straight up! But the most amazing thing was not one single person in there got any on them.
Number three. In the fettling shop we used to have to overhead gantry cranes a 25t and a 50t. When turning the large castings both were used to gently turn them over in the air. An amazing thing to see when done correctly. scary when not!! Castings occationally fell with ground shaking bangs. On one such occation turning a very large sump the fella using the 25t crane lifted to sharp snapping the wire rope which sprung round in a huge arc clipping a mate across his shoulder cutting through his collar bone, a couple of inches the other way would easily cut a vertical slice straight through his head.
Last one for now, in another foundry i worked they had a new lad in the casting room. All kitted up, new boots and all. If youve ever worked in a foundry you would know one of the cardinal rules is never tuck your trousers into your boots. The new lad never knew and the first laddle he poured a splash of iron hit his apron rolled down his trouser leg into his boot! He couldnt undo the buckles quick enough and by the time he did it was to late there was a half inch deep groove burnt down his calf and a hole in the bottom of his foot (and a faint smell of roast pork). Needless to say he never lasted there very long.

The sparky diconnected the motor and was making his way out while the fitters removed the motor, as they hadn't extended the forks into one of the pallet locations as soon as the motor came off, the lift "cradle" weighing a few tons dropped 30 feet onto the Sparky below

Somebody sees the sheet of flame and grabs an extriguisher to save poor Rob. Burns from the flash fire and worse burns from the CO2 extinguisher directed at the back of his head.
