careful with the grinder

Well I was using a grinder with a grinding disc many many many years ago.

I had long welding gauntlets on - I guess that could be called PPE - but then they were never called PPE. However, I gouged my wrist just where my watch goes normally. Luckily the gouge was right between the two veins and also missed the bone tendon. Hardly any bllod - justa flesh would - I counted my blessiongs.

By the way I am 43 now and still horny!

Only ever seen one bad one. Worked in a factory by a dock, boats had to be unloaded very quickly.
A thing on a crane that lifts pallets off said boat came off the crane hook, shackel not done up right. Caught a bloke on one side took his shoulder and arm right off.

Mine are fairly tame to be honest.

In my younger days when i went with my dad to look round a house we were buying, i went into the garage at the property and proceeded to step on a metal square surround used on a coldframe, the surround swung up from the floor and smashed me full on in the face giving me a nasty cut above my eye.

Next was using a scalpel to cut card to size, got a bit over eager to get it finished while chatting to a mate and didnt realise my thumb extended past the edge of the ruler so i proceeded to slice about 80% of the way across my thumb - couple of plasters tightly over the top sorted that one.

Putting rubbish in a skip seems a mundane task but i had to get as much in as possible, so climbed in to stamp stuff down, problem was that i didnt have my heavy boots on and a sharp bit of broken ceramic lay below - cue a sharp pain in my foot and my inspection to remove a 6" sharp of ceramic stuck through the sole of my shoe and deep into my foot, thankfully no tendons were damaged so just a tetanus shot and a bandage.

The best, however was removing an spd clip from my mountain bike pedals. The screws in the clip had sheared off so i had to forcefully remove the clip from the top of the pedal. As they dont come out easily with out being twisted I resigned myself to brute force in trying to prise it out with the biggest screwdriver i could find. However i was applying massive amounts of downward pressue while keeping my face underneath near the pedal to see if the clip was coming out. Cue the screwdriver slipping and me proceeding to punch myself across the nose harder than i have ever been hit before. Only a few days later on a meal out did the bleeding start and refuse to stop. I had damaged a nasal polyp which required several visits to A&E due to massive bleeding and eventually a trip to the ENT specialist to get it sorted - never seen or swallowed so much blood in my life !!!

Luckily other than cases of spanner rash and blood blisters I've not done too bad over the past 40 odd years except as follows.

Now lads, my sons were about 10 at the time, when you are using an electric drill don't hold whatever you are drilling in your hand like this for a couple of reasons, one is that the drill may jam in the workpiece and spin it at a fair rate of knots damaging your hands, the second is that bzzzzzzzzzzzzz you may drill right through your hand just like this

Yes, I hadn't unplugged the drill for the demo, nudged the trigger, had a 5mm drill in the chuck and a piece of two ply in my hand.

Thankfully the drill missed all the important bits but still entailed a trousers down at the doctors the following day

Next..........laid upside down, wedged under a dash, doing an awkward mig weld, one of those that take at least 10 mins to get your mask in the right place before you start.

Two apprentices on fire watch, hose, fire extinguishers all to hand, what could go wrong ?

I soon found out, the expected odd pop or two came and went as I welded, due to not being able to 100% clean the weld area, no problem, the interesting one was the pop, then hearing the sizzling in my right ear as the bit of molten metal singed its way through the hairs down my ear hole to my ear drum

I can't remember which was worse, the pain of it when it hit my ear drum or the struggle to get out of the car

Slashed my thumb open with a stanley knife (The old ones with the big fixed blade) Right down to the bone and then some,lots of blood so I wrapped it in insulating tape there and then, Poured methylated spirits on it for a few weeks, Still have a huge scar, theres a 1 inch part were I didnt squash the skin back together enough with the tape and its left a soft bit...

Sliced two 10mm circles off the side of my finger with a shearing thing, Missed the flappy bit between my fingers by a 1/4 of an inch

Stabed a screwdriver under a finger nail, Looked at it for a good few minutes before taking the plunge and yanking it out Should have left it in there!!!

All on the same lucky hand

Some trivial stuff-

Checking the oil in a van, didnt put the bonnet holder thing up, wind blew bonnet shut and trapped my hand under it, Was fine until I realised the release handle was inside the van!!

Stood on a bit of wood with a nail in it, Got the idea to just put my other foot on the wood so I could lift off the nail, Didnt look first and there was a second nail

Lifting bricks up onto a wall before going up to cement in place,Must have stacked a few on top of each other as a couple fell down and wacked me across the head!

welding last week, couldn't find my gauntlets, forgot to take my wedding ring off, got a hot ball stuck under the ring and melted a 1/4 of my finger away couldn't get the ring off fast enough..

today, welding up an outrigger on a tipper, had it held up by a piece of wood, went to grab my tape measure, knocked the wood, outrigger fell on my shin..

My mother stepped over a flower bed and stood on an old plank that my dad had left there ready for the tip... 4" rusty nail straight through her shoe and out the top of her foot!

"Do something!", she yelled at my dad. So he stood on the plank, grabbed her around the waist and pulled sharply upwards...

hi all. proper interesting one this one of my best but not metal related is breaking ym arm starting an old tractor... proper compund fract'ed and everyfin! what happened was about 4 weeks thru healing i was on a cadet camp doing the obs course properly board so i decided to make use of a vibrating lithium cutter thingmy which was for some reason in my work bag which i hadnt emptied outbefore coming much like they use in hosputal co then i hacked througheach side of the cast with ease and opened it outand removed my arm from it so then i decided to try it out by coming back on the excercise minus the cast i started helping people over the other side of a 12 foot wall until someone slipped off and i grabbed them with both arms and my arm went CRUNCH it was like having 2 elboes so i got picked up in a 110 sw ambulance and dont remember anything for the next 2 days till i iwoke up in the middle of the doc checking it out the 2nd day of being in hosp

lesson learned there!

Lost count of how many nails I've stood on, to the point of it could be easier to count the days I have not, they dont hurt any more, and when your feet are cold and wet the rush of hot blood warms them up.
Still got the scar where when removing a post and rail guard fence in a shed didn't bother taking the rails off first had the top rail crash down on my hand, no problem just hurt, with the shock of it happening, not till I tried to get rail off hand did I realise I was attached to it, by a 6" nail.
Thats when the fun started, as the way out was blocked by a tractor, the rail was 12ft long, so had to manipulate the rail out of side of the shed, past the tractor through a 3ft gap, with not much of a swing to it, managed that, switched the tractor off, dragged the rail 400yds to the office, to get them to ring a bloodwagon.
Normally you would just pull the nail out but this one was at the base of my thumb and sticking out the other side, so lots of bones, nerves and tendons etc.
I was not daft enough to pull that out, went to the Royal Surrey and after lots of xrays, and visits from student Drs, and various other prodders and pokers and 4 hrs deciding how to remove said nail, they used local and pulled it out.
Even they said it was the best move NOT to have pulled that one out, as what I did not know untill it was in a jar was that it was bent at 30 odd degrees and I could have done severe damage.
The ambulance crews bolt croppers, saved me from having a lump of wood coming with me, as I sent someone for the chainsaw (for the rail).
During recovery from this the pain was on a scale of 11, and pus exuded profusely till the antibiotics took effect.

If you want reall pain though the following is IMHO the ultimate in self inflicted agony.

Old stable walls used to be painted in some form of black tar paint, that stuck in great sheets, once ran my hands down to walls to pick up some loose hay from the corner of the stable to sling out.
As my right hand went in past the top of the hay, I felt this burning pain shoot up my arm, retrived arm to find this black stuff had gone up behind three finger nails index, middle and ring finger, over half way up each one.
This hurt like hell, but NOTHING like the ring blocks the sadist nurse inflicted on me as they dug out all the black stuff.

Sometimes I think we should just sink into a ball of cotton wool and stay there, much safer.

so i picked one up slid my hand down it past where some wire had been chopped off at an nasty angle and put it over my shoulder little did i know til there was a stream of the red stuff running down the post

When I was a good bit younger, I was rushing to finish off servicing my motorbike before I went to work. Last job was to grease the chain so I had it on the centre stand, engine on, in first gear applying the grease with my finger and thumb to the bottom of the chain. Next second my hand was on the top of the chain my thumb having taken the route between the chain and sprocket. The most painful thing was the anaesthetic they injected into it, but once it had started to work I couldn't feel a thing which was a good thing because the nail was all but off and they had to pull it off with pliers then they scrubbed it with a swarfega you could see the bone in the end of my thumb.
The latest was 7 weeks ago when I destroyed my wedding ring when I shorted out a wagon battery through it and got serious burn in the process. I was undoing the positive terminal and was keeping the spanner right inside my fist, I never thought about my wedding ring until I touched a bearer with it, with the other side of it touching the spanner. The first pic of my finger is the same day it looked like that as soon as I got the ring off within a couple of minutes, the second is about a week later after it had got a bit infected.

One time drilling a hole through the floor in work some cable got caught around the drill bit and simultaneously around his little finger and pulled the thing right off! surgeons managed to sew it back on but it's permanently bent at the knuckle now.

Parents eh, who'd have em.

Saw this on another forum. Guy had a bottle of acetylene leak in his car. Aired the car a bit but didn't account for the gas laying in his door panels etc. Went for a drive and could still smell acetylene so he pushed the button to open the electric window. This is what happened next:

A mate of mine called Paul Whitley, who I believe now runs an on-course bookies somewhere down south, once pumped some part of an old wagon full of grease, then went to wipe off an oozing trickle of grease with his thumb.
Just as the seal popped. High-pressure grease was injected into the end of his thumb, blowing it up like a balloon.
Off to hospital where they effectively handled it like a tube of toothpaste to get most of the grease back out :eek: - for weeks afterwards his party trick was to squeeze his thumbnail and deposit more grease on the table/ beer mat/ squeaky hinge...
