Many years ago I drilled through the little finger on my left hand due to my own laziness. I folded a bit of aluminium to make a bracket and couldn't be bothered to walk to the shed and put it in the vice. 1/8" drill for a pop rivet in the rechargeable drill and held it in place with my bare hand till the drill snagged and whipped it out of my fingers and went straight through the digit. I pulled it out still spinning and pulled the flesh out with it, went all light headed and sat on the floor. The nurse/doctor at the hospital looked at the stuff hanging out and just snipped it off with the scissors and I went all floppy again, there are a lot of nerves in fingers apparently. They were more concerned with the ligament but it was not damaged.

Mig welding fingers really hurts, but this was in a class of its own.

I was using a corded hand drill, the piece was clamped down to a bench, as I was putting a few holes in the bars it was a little easier than handling it all of the time. The drill bits, I believe, were Dormer, and I'd spent quite a bit of money on getting a bunch of new bits after something similar happened a number of years ago with some cheaper make bits.

Still not quite sure why or how my hand got in the way and bore the brunt of the snapped bit.

I thought to get a little extra penetration on the bar, I would partially drill into it, with a 5mm bit followed by a 7mm bit. All went well with the 5mm bit, and 2 further half(ish) depth holes were drilled. Swapped to the brand new 7mm bit, a bit of cutting/drilling paste and away we go. Slow and steady wins the race as they say.

I guess you found out that 5mm is far too big a pilot for a 7mm. Pilots should be 1/4-1/3 next size up or they snatch, especially as you say you just fitted a brand new bit.

My dad was a moulder before the war.

He told me that one day they'd been casting manhole covers in sand and they hadn't covered the sand bed with boards. A daft kid about 14 had started a week or two before and he was always dancing and skipping about. He danced over the sand bed and put his feet through into one of the castings, which was still molten. He fell and squealed like a rabbit. Both his feet had gone.

I worked with an ex docker once & one tea time he told us a yarn about a nasty accident in the 50's. They were loading a ship with general cargo for Africa, part of this was a few thousand pickaxe heads, they used to put a wire through the eye & roll them up in big bundles then tip them into a hole in the ships hold between crates of other stuff.
The hold was half filled when one of the dockers fell in about 20ft
He landed on his backside but one of the pickaxe heads was sticking up spike end first. It impaled him between his ******** & a**ehole. The poor bloke was only recently married but the injury destroyed all the nerves to his old chap & he never had a hard on ever again.
It remains one of the most eye watering stories i have ever heard.

Been self employed most of my working life, and had a few close shaves in that time, thought you might enjoy one of the more toe curling ones.

I was building a mock Georgian farm house on the South Downs a little inland of Beachy Head, all alone no one else for miles around, farmer not expected back till dark.

The house shell was up and the roof on, the walls were block construction with brick quoins, window reveals and arches, the areas between where to be filled in with flint work and lots of stainless wall ties had been built in to tie the flint to the block work, these were sticking out some 150mm and hooked at the end much like a question mark (?). The windows were yet to be installed.

It was an autumn day of sunshine and showers, I was on the top scaffolding lift which was halfway up the top floor window openings, all of a sudden a violent squall hit, horizontal stinging rain lashing down in biblical amounts.

I decided to drop down inside through a window opening, my feet were feeling for the joists (no floorboards yet) when it felt like my left shirt sleeve was caught on something, 'Oh bother I said' and gave it a tug, nothing gave so I tugged harder....then it dawned on me that I had taken my shirt off during a sunny spell and I was only wearing a T shirt, oops!

After much struggling I managed to get back up onto the scaffolding to find that one of the wall ties had penetrated my wrist and my struggles had pushed it in further until the hooked end was halfway along my inner forearm under my skin!

I was now laying on my back, trying to clear the water off my glasses with my free hand whilst not moving my other arm so the hook would lay flat and not get tangled up in the sinews, arteries and other bits in my arm, getting it in was easy, coming out was going to be a bit tricky! A nice steady deluge had started to fall off the gutter less roof by this time just to cheer me up..

Any how, to cut a long story short I did eventually manage to unhook myself after much polite muttering, squirming and contortion, unbelievably there was no swelling blood or pain of any sort at all, all I have to show is a small puncture mark on my wrist.

Then the sun came out and it was as if I had imagined the whole thing, carried on working no problems, I can't believe I got away with it, some times you just get lucky!

A maxim to abide by when approaching any kind of tool, from small hand tools to massive machine monsters is this;

Don't stick yer finger where you would hesitate to stick yer nob

Follow this and you should make out OK.

Ladies, I've yet to come up with a suitable alternative, sorry

I learnt when you are using a stanley knife to cut the top of a tube of silicone its best to cut away from oneself........

The bone on your index finger is ...... well, it's interesting.......

Also, when moving the forks on a telescopic machine, try and keep your fingers clear before dropping the fork into place.....

Suspension spring compressors are nasty things. Well the official Renault tool probably costing £250 looks safe but the little hooky things you can buy or hire aren't in the same league.

I had a narrow escape with one 20 years back and decided not to be so silly again, at least with compression springs.

A couple of years back, a full-time mechanic and car restorer living a couple of streets away had a finger badly busted when a spring compressor slipped.
