nothing wrong with those tools if you use them correctly ie make sure they are spaced and compressed evenly, ive never had one go

I worked with a bloke whose brother had a garage and he hired out the suspension spring work.
The official Renault tool had a locking band to prevent the arms flying off.
I was using two pairs of compressors when they went off. I'd turned to find a spanner and was lucky.
The bloke down the road is a mechanic of 30 years experience.
Like I say, I don't like them. Still, if you've had no problems and have got the spacing and tensioning right, that speaks for itself.

used a pair only last wednesday on a mk 3 diesel mondeo, but i suppose a bad experience would be off putting, the hydraulic type are best

I quickly learnt how to use a pair if spring clamps correctly the first time I used a pair. Me and a friend were changing the front springs on his Peugeot 306, took the first strut out and clamped in a vice, managed to remove the compressed spring with no issues but as I was making a brew my friend went hell for leather removing one if the spring clamp with an 1/2" impact gun of all things!! We didn't see where the spring went but it made a mess of the garage and once I'd come from taking cover I saw my friend hopping around with his finger in his mouth and blood gushing from it. We were 17 yrs old at the time and we laughed our heads off afterwards but got away lightly thinking about it now

About 20yrs ago I remember a TV Prog on BBC on the Edinburgh Tattoo. They were training taking the gun over the obstacles, when one of them lost a middle finger, one of the others found it and stuck it on has pocket. They asked around saying of they found it quick enough they could get it put back on. The guy how found kept in in his pocket, said it will make him think next time.
Another class of nasty accidents is equipment being started when it shouldn't be.
A friend was adjusting the fanbelt tension of his brother-in-law's VW Beetle. The brother-in-law, who wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, decided to start the engine and took the end of one of his fingers off. He hit him and knocked him flat. They never got on after that.

That sounds familiar...
Probably the closest call was putting the chocks in front of the wheels of a biplane I had just restored. The junior mec in the cockpit managed to hit the starter button AND the switches were on. The starter is a compressed air type on that engine and makes virtually no noise. It spun and fired with one of the prop blades passing through the hair on the back of my head (i Had a bit more then...)
There followed a little chat reminding him about the safety procedures, one of which is to shout 'clear prop' before you touch anything.

This reminds me of an incident back in 1996, i owned a 21ft open sailing boat & we had been out on the yacht clubs annual nore race. Its a 16 mile race round the thames estuary. Anyway we didnt have a good race (nearly sank the boat) and finished nearly last. Sailed back up the creek on the incoming tide & ran her on the mud at her mooring.One of my crew was a right **** head & had drunk a whole crate of 1664 lager plus several more. He jumped ashore & tied ropes to our mooring so we could pull ourselves in as the tide rose.
A couple of resuce boats turned up & held alongside us, more tinnies were passed around & all were having a right old laugh.
One of the girls in the resue boat (a 13 ft dory with 40hp outboard) wanted to go ashore to the loo so the driver stood up & ripped the starter cord. Unfortunately the engione was in gear & as it started the boat took of in a circle & he fell across the engine. In the mayhem the pisshead was still in the water & the dory ran him over not once but twice.
I remember us all screaming at him to get out of the way but he was up to his waist in the tide & could not run. He pushed the boat off the first time & as it came round for the second time dived out of the way. We all fully expected the water to turn red. The driver of the dory managed to reach the kill switch & stopped it. We pulled Stuart out of the water & all he had was a 4" long graze where the outboard had hit him. He said he actually felt the propellor brush his leg. We got him ashore & despite the crate of bust head lager he was stone cold sober.

Talking of messing about I used to work at a truck repair and paint shop that had a graphics department. I was working on the back threshold of a fridge trailer while one the signs lads was fitting a decal to the back end also. As it was Friday and almost home time this kid jumped of his ladders right near me and started prancing around, anyway I was getting stuck into fitting the rear lights when he grabbed my arms sending the Stanley knife that was in my right hand into the soft pad on the palm of my left hand. The blade was fully exposed from the knife and it went right in but also cut an 11/2" down my palm. It didn't hurt much but there was so much blood Gushing out I went white, ( I don't really do pain but this made me feel sick, the doctor said it was adrenalin that made me want to vomit). After spending five minutes with a Triage nurse I was rushed through to get it checked out. 9 stitches later I was out.

Bother in law works for a Bus company down sarf. last year a Mechanic was doing a Pre MOT on a bus, while checking the steering/suspension someone else turned the steering wheel. Crushed the poor guys head, killing him.
Am I to assume you introduced him to the term 'knuckle sandwich'?
What a total divot and exactly the reason why I don't like horseplay, because sooner or later someone always gets injured!

Fell down a hole the other day, best thing was I'd covered the hole myself so was happy with its strength, been walking over it for the last week, but not until today have I walked over it with 2 concrete blocks.... Down I went. Ended up opening up my wrist, you could poke your thumb in. never bled at all, steri striped up and it was fine

So on August Bank Holiday Sunday I decide its just about dry enough to mow the back lawn. Out comes the ride-on mower and off I go, did the first run around the outside ok and was just negotiating a tricky area around the only tree in the garden, taking extra care as usual, when I caught the end of my shoe on a long branch which pulled my foot off the clutch. At the same time the front of the mower caught the said branch and pulled it in towards the tree!
As I couldn't get my foot back on the clutch I couldn't stop the mower going forward and stupidly didn't get my leg out of the way, trapping it between the mowers seat box and the branch.
Amazingly it didn't hurt (much) but I couldn't get off the mower even when I stopped the engine as I was in first gear and the drive train was loaded up, I couldn't reach the clutch pedal with my foot or hand and was stuck fast!
So, I sat there for a few minutes, there was no one else home, and thought what do I do now?
There is a hard plastic tube that takes the grass from the cutter to a box on the back, so I managed to get this off and reach over and push the clutch in, enough to get my leg out, and move the mower back.
Fearing the worst I rolled my trouser leg up to find a fairly large gash on my shin and a bit of redness where my calf was trapped. Bit of Savlon on the cut, covered over with clean kitchen roll and off I go and finish the lawn.
The enemy comes back, and I explain I've had a bit of an accident, she takes a look and decides its time for a trip to A&E as the cut is still ok but the redness is now going blue!
Luckily A&E was quiet and I got in quickly. The nurse cleaned the cut up and put 5 large sterry strips over it and a dressing, told me to keep my leg up for a couple of days as the bruising was quite severe and come back if anything seemed amiss. So that’s what it looked like when I got back from A&E.

Following on, I had a couple of days with my leg up and then three days at work hobbling around. On the Saturday we decided to back into A&E to hav it checked at it looked like this. I was lucky as I dropped on a specialist in this type of crush wound who told me to keep my leg up, 6" above my hip for at least a week, and go back and see her one week later. The biro lines around the bruise was put on by the Treage Nurse for future checks to see if the redness was getting worse!
