very minor update

managed to clear most of the rocks/rubble soil etc into a 8 tonne skip over the weekend. Not the best job for last saturday by hand when it was about 27 degrees!!. I was starting to hallucinate by the end of it!

You`re a hero for moving all that on the hottest day of the year, so far!...

Felix, or abilgail as she's known, along with the rest of the neighbourhood cats will be kidnapped prior to pouring the base and put in my shed so none of the little ******s get in the pfreshly poured base whilst its curing

Cat..ch them well before hand and bury them head to tail to make a land drain when they rot away

May I suggest that you make sure you have some long stuff and blocks / bricks to stand on the frame so you can make a cloth ( we used freecycle sheets and blankets & material ) tent over it to stop the sun drying it out too quick on top , lightly spray hose the material down every few hours to keep the evaporation steady .
I think the first 24 hrs is the most critical time for if you let it dry too quick the top will spall off at a later date.

I had a full 36 hr duty on our power floating exercise of 400 mtr sq x 200 mm thick sulphate resistant reinforced concrete base but it looked and was fantastic .

My lass brought out scoff and lots of water and woke me every 4 hrs if I was gonking .

Imagine the how the squaddies out in Afghanistan do it in 44 oC with any thing upwards of 75 pounds of gear on them and they run around.

any updates on the build if not i suspect you have you been slacking off in the pub across the road while the sun is shining
either way im enviable of A (having a garage building project) or B (having a pub next door) but it think it will boil down to C (having a garage project and a pub next door)

I'd rather run up a plank with the barrow. We were filling our pond in while you were doing this and now I have to level the bottom of the garden where we took the spare soil from. There's a tree in it so I was chopping roots as thick as my arm (little weedy ones) and I went and bought a mattock from B&Q for the rest of the job. The tree is a Birch about 30ft tall and it's days are numbered as well as it is getting too big for it's surroundings. My shed is under a branch and it fills the gutter with leaves and causes damp. Keep up the good work and keep out of the pub till knock off.

been a bit busy recently so progress has slowed but hopefully the base should be finished in the next week. I've just been putting together the last bit of shuttering.

I've opted to get some professionals in to do the pour and power float it. I've been quoted a couple hundred quid for labour which i think will be well worth it it to have a professional job done rather than risk me ballsing it up!

Tonight i finished the shuttering and cut and bound all the matabar sheets in place so we're good to go for the pour! just need to check when they can do it!

Can I suggest a bit more support behind that OSB shuttering. It's not the strongest stuff and even though the upstand is quite small, and you've got a stiffening batten, I can forsee a bow developing when the concrete is poured and then tamped.

Absolutely! I'm going to have 45 degree supports against the sides and dug into the garden whilst it's being poured to give it added strength

Watching this to get tips on concreting , you managed very well with the small mixer so far , how do the costs compare to ready mix ? I have laid about 4Mx4Mx100cm in slabs mixing in the barrow with a spade and realise would be better using a mixer or maybe just ordering ready mix for the rest and as you are doing paying the proffesionals as it would all be done in one day instead of three weeks , I think diy concreting only costs less if you dont put a value on your time the only benefit being its helping me lose my beer belly . More photos please .

there is no significant saving in mixing your own, except that you are in control.

redimix drivers dont like hanging round too long, maybe 45-60 min / load ( say 4-6m3) (unless you know them lol) so you need some help & need to get a wiggle on

And theres the occasional issue of ordering and paying for 6m3 of readymix to have the load not fill a calculated at 4.5m3 area form properly let alone starting to fill the other forms you have around to take the overspill. Even after wetting down...
Plus when you get over a certain quantity delivered in one hit, you start running into issues like it going off at the other end while your tamping the start still, or your halfway through and the same starts to happen while your trying to float it. Especially if there isnt a big gang of willing physically able people and in hotter weather...

And last but not least being so shattered at the end of a big pour you leave the powerfloat inside after floating because you cant get it through the doorway on your own, only to find it glued to the floor the next day and ruining that part of the floor...

As said, handmixing it puts you in control with the delivery speed more, but is harder work and more difficult to get a consistent mix and colour unless your fastideous with measuring with a bucket etc.
I mean handmixing as in loading the mixer by hand, I woudlnt mix in a wheelbarrow by hand for anything but a quick bit of mortar or something...

well D-Day is Thursday!! so tonight i finished wacking in a few side supports for the shuttering



i've also covered the car lift recess shuttering in visqueensheeting so that the finished edges should be smooth



and to ensure that the cement doesn't creep under the recess shuttering i've mastic'd it to the concrete base and run a small bead of sealant round the bottom so hopefully that'll do the job.

Well it seems to be going quite well so far! despite the builder getting a parking ticket after i said he was fine to park on the pavement across the road from me!! whoops
