New roll, amazing!

Been suffering some issues for a while - lots of spatter being the most annoying, all of my stuff is ornamental and takes ages to file off the spatter.

I ran out of 0.8mm ER70s Mig wire yesterday, had a roll of 0.6mm SifMig SG2 in the airing cupboard

Took a while to get used to the new parameters and on 3mm steel the wire feed is pretty much maxed out but WOW! what a change in weld - nice smooth beads and zero spatter, not a drop!

I've ordered some 0.8mm SG2 so hopefully that will be as good.

Very odd as i wasn't expecting that, happy though.

There was no rust on the 0.8mm, nice and clean right to the end.

You did change the roller over for the 0.6 didn't you? sounds like it's slipping if you have to go to the max speed.

Of course

Its only a 160A machine and 3mm is shown as the max for 0.6mm on the chart so being almost maxed out seems right, i think volts was 20 IIRC

The welds were consistent and very smooth.

I will keep that brand of wire in mind for my next roll, my so called quality wire from ebay is not the best I have used and I suspect it's not what it is claimed to be.

I think that was an eBay reel too, cant remember what brand and there was no label on the spool.

Will stick with SifMig i think

Sg2 is usually higher quality wire

We are always learning. I thought spatter depended on the gas, straight co2 or more co2 in the argoshield = more spatter. Never thought wire would make that much difference.

I guess wire speed will influence it too?
So might be a result of re-calibration rather than the wire itself

Good morning gents.

Several months ago got a roll of .9mm er70s wire and fed it into a new machine. Since the machine was new and I was unfamiliar with it, I blamed everything except the wire. I was getting spatter and the most severe case when finished welding was getting little volcanos popping up in the weld beed, as if no sheilding gas. What allerted me to a potential problem with the wire was, mig wire is supposed to be 'fully killed' no gas in the wire, however it was at time showing the effect of a rimming steel. Any way a got a new spool from a different supplier and now what a difference. It was the wire all along went through 95% of the spool with these issues which no one could explain. Another noticable difference was the sound that it was making during welding. Ant way all good now, spoke to the supplier of the offending spool, gave them the batch number and asked if anyone else had a problem, expectanly their responce was no!

I start to suspect your machine was not previously getting just enough juice into things with the thicker wire and the 0.6 mm was easy peasy for it. Hence a lot easier to dial in with a larger Tollerance around the sweet spot. However it could also be stiffer for diameter, your wire feed / torch could be worn or crudded up. Etc etc.

Thats interesting as i tried out the 0.8 a day ago and there was some spatter, not as bad as the old reel but not as good as the 0.6 was.

You feel i should try more volts and less feed?

Main reason for spatter generation is incorrect parameter selection, you can get virtually spatter free welds with pure CO2 if you tune the set in correctly

That sounds reasonable so what are the prime causes for spatter?

Too much feed?
Wrong voltage?
?

Not enough volts
Excessive stick out
Wrong angle
Wrong travel speed
Then you have all the other stuff like, contaminated plate or consumables etc etc

I recommend you start at full wack on every knob and dial and work back slowly working the wire back slowly (record your findings). There are other stuff but without doing this you will never really learn or learn a set. After a good period of time and different jobs you will be able to dial in any set without looking at the dials and just tune things In.

Hmm, not sure if its me, the wire or the machine now

I upped the volts and feed, tested, tweaked the feed down a little and it looked better, made a couple of welds, came out OK, then got worse, pictures show the worst of the day...





Spatter city basically, took a while to file off

The welds looked fine, just sh1t-loads of spatter but i don't know why.

Any suggestions, i could really do without switching from 0.6 to 0.8 all the time and 0.6 wont do the bigger stuff i do.

If you increase your travel speed does the spatter stop

Not noticeably, bit tricky though as the welds are pretty short, they are not overly proud though so speed seemed about right?
