Has anyone made / installed a compressor that’s belt driven off the engine?

I am looking at the AC pump ones and they seem to be so easy there must be a catch. I have a spare pulley so it’s doable.

I have everything required apart from the compressor itself. Don’t have the funds for a Wilton but wondering if an AC one would suffice just to prove or disprove a point…..

Shouldn’t be on loads, just for blowing out filters and pumping the occasional tyre. Everything else I have is battery operated.

Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience? I can search gaztube as well as the next man so looking for real life experience

Was looking at doing an AC compressor conversion myself to save some space rather than putting a petrol one in the van and some weight. Dose seem to be a fairly simple premise just have to remember to do a daily check sheet and include check compressor oil level each day or more I’ll have to or I’ll forget. There are plenty of engine driven hydraulic power take offs maybe one of them would be man enough to run a hydraulic drive compressor. Saw a hydraulic driven welder for the back of service vans before.

That’s interesting. Possibly not the road I’d go down because of space but in a van it would work fine I’d think

You used to be able to get a pump for the transits. Not sure if it was a true PTO or what but the little hiabs use them

@sako243 has an ac pump on his defender. I suppose it would depend on air requirements, an ac pump would be ok for pumping up tyres but wouldn't run windy tools.

That’s all it’s for Bob. I’ve got lorry air tanks coming out my ears so an accumulator or two isn’t an issue.

It’s either that, or the daddy of inverters to run a small 240v compressor.

It’s hard to know what direction to go in really.

Hydraulic pump for the older style l200 than yours unfortunately canny find one for yours but copied be adapted I suspect.

If you do go down the ac pump route dont buy one, I have a nest of NOS pumps on the shelf. Need to consider oil recirc, it doesnt take long for the oil within the pump to end up in the lines and cause them to seize.

I looked at this in the distant past from Memory the York Compressors are a much better output, they were scarce even then but I got one from a 70's Volvo

If you do go down the ac pump route dont buy one, I have a nest of NOS pumps on the shelf. Need to consider oil recirc, it doesnt take long for the oil within the pump to end up in the lines and cause them to seize.

Cheers. Might take you up on that at some point. I need to work out a plan first.

There’s a video I have seen and he puts an in-line oiler on the suction.

Seems to work. I wonder if the guts would need modified somehow?

York is what I saw online last night.

Delphi seemed to work well but York appears to be the ‘one’

I was parked next to a Range Rover when the owner got in and started the vehicle. Just took a few seconds for the pump to raise the suspension significantly so assume they are quite powerful and decent flow rate
