I can’t find a small petrol compressor at all, let alone at a sensible price. I don’t have the space or the weight available for a big one. Don’t need a big one either, really.

It’s a pain in the ****. Pretty much the only thing I need one for is blowing up tyres and blowing out filters. There is nothing else I would use one for out and about.

Thing is, those two things are quite handy functions if you fix **** for a living!!!

Most lorry compressors I deal with are gear driven off the engine. Don’t think I’ve seen a belt one recently. However, it should (I’d think ) be reasonably straightforward to take the gear off and put a v pulley on. Then run it from whatever.

Not sure if speed is a thing though. Shouldn’t be. It’ll just work faster or slower, I imagine

Yeah building a suitable mount and modifying the main crank pulley will probably be the hardest part.

Gear driven ones generally rely on engine oil for lubrication.
The old belt driven ones were self-contained.

Not all belt drive are self contained. Gardner ones are pressure fed and drain through the base. And most are water cooled.

I was looking at them but one that’s worth spending money on is more than the m18 battery one. That low cfm isn’t an issue as I’ll use lorry tank as an accumulator anyway. Makes for a more constant volume of air, to a point.

Was looking on YouTube last night and the York and Sanden AC compressors seem to be the go to for the off road guys in the states. Plenty about converting them and so forth.

An off the shelf-ish solution would be handy at least in the short term.

Not sure what the duty cycle is on the M18 (and others) battery compressors, ie. how big a tank you could fill?
I'd guess they have overheat protection though plus all the pressure switching is already built in. Would seem to be a good solution, probably not much more expensive than fitting something to the van.
You also get the advantage of being able to just take it out if you want to use it somewhere else so you are not limited by hose length and it's a lot easier to move between vehicles if you change cars or just want to take it with you in a mates truck.

Metabo do a 36v one (2x18v), not looked much so don't know if anybody else does but you could build/buy battery adapters cheap enough.

I was slightly wrong, it's still next to the skip, along with some generators.
I know the story behind the generators, which I think are now lost in the system due to issues with where they should have been heading, and the respective owners probably not wanting them back as they're rarely used and just take up van space. However I'll need to ask somebody about the compressor which has appeared on top of the generator collection this week..

Seems to work. I wonder if the guts would need modified somehow?

Downside all that oil could end up in any tyres you inflate, upside is if its for air tools then thats one less job to do daily.

I think a lot of them use a drier / dessicator on the output. That’s the thing about making stuff, it just grows and grows!!

Plug and play is sometimes a better option especially if it’s on a work truck and needs testing.

I think they're rated quite highly. The other possibility given you have an air tank is the ARB compressor? The twin is about £400 but only 90psi but that's just a case of swapping out the pressure switch I think, well Gigglepin sell one: https://gigglepin4x4.net/arb-high-output-pressure-switch-135-150psi-2312-p.asp

It's not a particularly quiet compressor but all self contained in about 4" tall, 8x6" box roughly from memory, central fitting for the air output and then some connectors for powering it. Just hook up a tank of your choice. For your purposes though I'd say the Viair was a better value especially if you can get it supplied without a tank.

I did it with the Aircon pump on the td5, to lubricate the air intake came from the rocker cover, non return valve on the outlet, 12v air pressure switch and a tank hidden in the back. Quickly inflated tyres

On a ship I was on we made a little stand ounce to sit on the deck and we attached a portable water and oil separator to it so we could use it at any air out point on the ship. Though I’m sure you could hard mount something in your pickup body.

I bought this 12v compressor/tank combo to run the aux air solenoids that operate the pto actuators on my 101. That was only about £100.

Wonder what the run time and flow is like. Ideally I’d like to blow a tyre up in a couple of minutes.

I had a tmax pump. They were the b0llocks. Mines now 10 years old, been worked hard and has died. Hence the head scratching for a replacement idea.

Why not just another one or 2 of them with maybe a air reservoir aswell easy enough to change between trucks then aswell if you wired it to say a anderson plug aswell
