I did the same thing. I gave up a job paying up to 4X more than I earn now. I worked in the cement and power industry manufacturing and installing parts into classifiers, mills, silos. I worked in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Jordan, Egypt and many more earning a lot of money. my reasons I didn't do it forever are obvious as you know I've 2 young kids and I was not seeing them.
Point being we don't know each other and I can think of many reasons people step out of industry's. Money doesn't drive everyone.

I decided not to bother again trying to help someone start up a business as business is a horrible place to be IMHO.

I Don't have much money...but my son now has a great job he loves and I see my grandson a lot something I missed with my son growing up.

Money is not always the driving force but it would be nice to have a decent helmet to make a few quid with.............so can we work out which one I should buy please...

What's the budget? If you give an idea of how much you want to spend maybe someone would be able to give a recommendation in that price range.

I don't have alot cash either pal and certainly don't make enough repairing boats. The overheads of doing the job are huge, particularly the insurances, two young kids etc so every penny is a prisoner
If you are looking for a good value helmet. The"savephace" twisted soul is about £130. It is very comfortable to wear and great for getting into tight spaces as it moulds round the face. Alot of my welding jobs are in Awkward spaces so is great. A eclipse breathing mask will fit below it too. You can see it on rapidweldings website. I hope this helps

The savephace is both light and comfortable but not at all flimsy like some I have worn. I love it and it looks amazing too..

I bought the Lincoln Viking 3350 and accesories when it was on offer for £160 including vat. Used it for about 8 months now and I am really happy with it, a big viewing area, light and comfortable and it copes well with low amp TIG.

This is what I am trying to establish. I had a speedglass air system and sold it as I did not like it.

I hVe an 80 quid mask now but not sure I would buy another. Main reason it seems to react to surrounding light as much as it does the arc.

It might be the way I had my lighting in the garage so when I get the workshop wired I might find out.

That said the ratchet sytem to hold the lid up is pretty useless IMHO.

So..........if paying another 100 quid means I can see better and find the whole thing more enjoyable I might feel like practising more.

I have a cheapy ESAB of the type sold by Rapid for £78, and while its not comparable to my Miller or Speedglas, it works fine for anything other than low amp Tig.

That's really strange rich. I was just on eBay usa after reading your previous post on it and talking about helmet options earlier. It does look a cracker. What do you reckon between the vegaview and the Lincoln 3350 for low amp tig?

How about the miller digital elite rich. I have heard the xmode for positional welding Is awesome and some welders just leave it on That knowing they won't ever get a flash. Miller have just released the infinity digital which looks awesome.

It is a preference thing, most welders now use an auto darkening welding helmet because they are tech of today. No flipping up and down masks anymore to get into position. That tech didn't exist years ago, you made do with wot was available - you had to that's all you had. Auto darkening is just another modern day tool to help you

Never used the digital elite either but I have had a good few hours with the esab aristo hd which also has the X tig mode and yes it's very good even from a point that other welders in the shop don't activate the adf. Great for going round tubes where the sensors become interfered.

I can't mention what I use and I use it for very little. 1 I don't know how to weld tig yet a 2 the mig I don't feel like bothering much. Due to not enjoying the helmet. Sounds stupid I know but much of it is experience. Lack of. And time has been short recently. It looks like I might get a couple of days a week back soon so I have been tidying stuff around........I am getting there.

I say I don't have money...who does just after xmas. Lol but I have 300 quids worth of bolts to move to give me space back and it will give me the cash flow back again

That said I won't be buying a helmet until I have taken up Richards kind offer of a few hours tuition. So I might have more idea then. What I do know is my welds wander because I can't line myself before the arc correctly due to lights issues and sensors.

It's not always true that paying more gets you anything better but at times it can. I can fish better if I spend more time prepping at home.

I don't need a more expensive pole but having 10 top kits available made a massive difference to my fishing.

I don't want a Navara as I am happy in a Nissan Note. But I need one to tow the fifth wheel.

If all that makes sense?
