Oxy acetylene tip going red hot

I started using Oxy Acetylene when I was about ten (my father would have been jailed in today's culture) and one thing I do know about it, that gas has no mercy when it goes wrong. I would read the PDF Brad has linked to, then I would read it again.
I would suggest you make 100% sure your flash arrestors are working, then test them again. Personally I think you have had a very lucky escape, don't tempt fate.

Just making sure but there arrestors are definitely on the right way round? Probably not something a untrained 19 year old should be using lol

The par weld regulator completely confuses me. I have had it working fine but the other night it kept going hot.

just to clarify, did the acetylene regulator get hot or were you refering to the tip?

The tip isn't so bad. A few of us, me included, thought you meant the reg was getting hot. That is bad. Very bad.

The thing is acetylene or propane both dangerous in different circumstances. Propane is inherently safer in some respects. I’d use acetylene every day though.

Acetelyne wins for me because its lighter than air. Propane is a bugger if you're round drains and gullies

i have neither and only recently used up dad acetylene, i will probably just go propane as i only use it for brazing and heating. if i had the use it would be acetylene for me to

Propane cuts fine. I was cutting 50mm plate the other day without a problem because acetylene ran out and that’s what I had. I think if I was keeping it in or near a domestic premises I’d stick with propane as insurance companies seem to have a sh1t fit as soon as you mention acetylene. It’s easier to transport too, you don’t need to keep it upright etc etc.

about four feet with oxy acet, so I was told by the guy who taught me , and that wasnt yesterday after that it starts to get tight .... now thats got to be worth seeing.

Yeah when you get on the machines where you can fine tune the speed of cut you can get really good results in much thicker than that.

I did 120mm the other week and I was impressed. Thickest I’ve done. It was severing a bar so not a long cut in plate but managed to get it nice and neat which was important for the job

seen well over 100mm on a pantograph type machine. Good finish too
