My first car 1971. I always claimed it was a Sunbeam-Talbot 90, but really it was a Sunbeam Mk III

My Dad had an 80 Convertible for a while [light metallic green], even put a new double-duck roof on it.

Sometimes your parents can surprise you, we had no idea he was buying it - just went out one day in the old car and came home with the Sunbeam.

We have rumours in the family he worked for the MOD but knowing my family he could have also have worked for MFI, But he was a character much like my dad and his dad, i think the car was some kind of jaguar or before jaguar before they were called jags

I thought it looked rather like an SS but the mascot confuses me.

Edit: Whatever it is he must have had an 'interesting' life to be owning and running that in war time.

I mentioned the Tucker 48 and the GM Futurliner in an earlier post (by the way, there is a 'Kindig Customs' TV prog featuring a Futurliner on the 'box this week) but there is one other I'd like to add and that's the Buckingham V12.

I had cause to get quite up close and personal with this monstrosity in 1986 shortly after it had been built. The chap that commissioned it had made a complaint to the coachworks about the paint falling off and long story short, it came into our workshop for the remedial works. My part in all this? I had to fabricate and install the bars on all the workshop windows so that the insurance company would accept the extra risk of having a £250,000 vehicle on the premises!

Shape of front wongs? (wongs? Wot's a wong M8? any relation to a wing?)

Or just two different coachbuilders?

Here’s another enjoyable bike that I had until 10 years ago,it was huge fun solo up to 70,never had a bike with such easy precise steering,so long as you didn’t have a pillion,could use all the trad then run out of clearance,was also quite usable off road including carrying my 20 kg paraglider on the back seat(dog reluctantly left at home),was extremely light,contrary to the critics at the time,was a perfect height for my 5’11”.
If only they sorted the vibes!the green one is a favourite colour that I never saw in the flesh,it’s a catalog photo.

View attachment 238785 I had a '71 Marina van as my 1st car, cost me £15. 1.3 A Series.. low compression version. Only one front wheel brake worked, and no handbrake. That's how you learn to drive, the youth of today got it easy, blah blah..
Strong and reliable though, I would get another.. if it was a similar price today!

Father bought a pick version of that (same colour) in the late 80s that I learnt to weld on (after an evening course). Think we replaced over 50 panels in the end. Did it under a polythene tent with snow on the ground at one point.
Found a van in a breakers yard which we chopped the back end off to get a new floor for the bed.

I ended up using it quite a lot. Collected a new engine for my Mini in it. Me and the future MrsG went out in it quite a lot too ...

Just did a search and the original webpage about the restoration is still up. Only one picture though as we had no digital camera back in those days, or scanner.

The dog-in-a-box reminds me of dear old Dad and his Vespa 125 HEU 909. My dog - imaginatively named Patch - rode everywhere with him. Initially on the floorboard then perched in the box once he fitted it. He used the scooter for work - Lynemouth then Linton Colliery - local runs to the allotment and general errands. As she could smell the difference between 'pit clothes' and others she would raise one disdainful eyebrow and watch him go off to work. Any other clothes as soon as she heard the distinctive rattle of the keys she was at the door and in the box before he could get to the scooter.

This is me and baby sister on it. Baby sister is a 1962 model so this must be c. 1963. Yes he did fit a bicycle seat to the pillion and baby sister used to ride around like that - hence the safety bonnet!

This is my last road bike,only Harley ever owned,as never liked them bar the sheer good looks of a street rod,this after seeing a YT video on launch,looked a lot more rideable,I loved the grunt and power ,the brakes and handling were reasonable,it would wheelie (uphill) and you could use all the ground clearance.
Biggest criticism was its weight,I had a steep ramp up onto that bridge to get out.
Ironically the reg were my initials.
I thought it was well built,although it was a summer only ride.

Ah, the happy days of short trousers on lads. At least it saved damaging fabric when scraping the knees.

Slightly off topic, but Marina pick up / car related; in the late 1980’s I worked for Silcock Express, we had the contract for moving all Rover cars for export from Longbridge and Cowley to Southampton, this was before the M40 was open.

Anyway, in the spring we used to start getting tree damage to the cars on the top deck (we were running triple deckers with 11 cars at 16’6”) coming down the A34 from Birmingham, and as the councils weren’t interested in cutting them we did it ourselves, cue one Brummie ‘tree surgeon’ in his Marina pick up. We put the pick up on the top deck of the transporter above the cab, gave him a whistle, he stood in the back of the pick up and every time he came to a low branch would blow the whistle, driver would stop the truck, chainsaw off the offending branch and lob it on the back of the truck. It took two weeks to do Birmingham to Oxford - the A34 from Oxford south was already dual carriageway and was OK - and back again up the other side - we would sometimes get a backload. Never had any hassle with police or council bar occasionally being asked what they were up to, don’t know what happened to all the arisings...

I own the same unloved little orphan XR1200. I've spent time and money dealing with Harley's cynical failure to either meet the expectations of its original target market- Europe, or live down their reputation for bling over substance.

Now? It goes round corners with the aid of dampers that work, an exhaust with proper ground clearance, gearing that isn't just about stoplights, brakes that....brake, a gear linkage that doesn't flex to the point of idiocy, levers not carved from the solid with a chainsaw, but devoid of any adjustability.

I could go on, but I'm boring myself........

It does have character though, and I'm very fond of it, despite having since ridden a bog stock Guzzi Griso which, apart from the pipes, needed no modifications at all and was stuffed with character.

I conclude from my experience of meeting the average Harley rider- most of whom view my ride as a sad lapse from what they expect of the MoCo- that it's akin to a religion. Never mind if sacrificing all your virgins didn't ever bring in a good harvest, our god is our god and we'll stick with him. Their god of course is tittering all the while, and lapping up their adulation......
