My Fiat 124 sport from over 35 years ago.
I got out of a scrap yard where there was a couple of cars stacked on the roof, hence the steel sunroof which came out of a 3 series BMW.

Everything was done for next to nothing but it was a classy car back in the day.
I painted it Jaguar mineral blue (it’s amazing I can remember that but not what I had fir breakfast) and drove it for years until it broke the diff.
I left it at mates house and his da sold it to the scrap man.

My brother was (is) into photography and took the shot, he found the negative and sent me a copy recently so I used it as my avatar.

Mother-in-law with her parents, East Africa, 1920. Don't know what the car was.


Wife's grandfather, who was employed building the Kenya-Uganda railway, c1925.


Father in his company car (Citroen?), c1930.

Mother with 14hp Lea-Francis. Manufactured as a van to avoid double purchase tax, bought s/h by my parents c1952 and converted to estate car. I was the youngest, and travelled in the folding 3rd row seat, where the bouncy ride (behind the rear axle) often made me car-sick.

A placky 90 chicken chaser, the first vehicle I owned . Used to run it round some of the local fields and farm tracks, great fun, the plan was to get it on the road and get my licence, didn't have an MOT and it failed the test I took it for, didn't have the mechanical knowhow to sort it back then so it never hit the road and I never got my licence.

I got an apprenticeship as a mechanic and the push was for me to get my car licence, sold the bike for next to nothing.

1934 Morris Eight I bought in 2003. Well, I bought the top half of a rusted out body shell, with no chassis or running gear. I broke out my trusty mig and stick welders and, in an 8 x 12 council shed, I repaired the bodywork, chopped 3” out of the roofline, converted it from 4 doors to 2, built a chassis and installed the vital parts of a Rover SD1 within it.

After several years and 5000 fault free miles I sold it on, and the next owner still has it, still drives it occasionally.

My bro in law was in to older bikes but now doesn't seem to bother about them (He went through a dry stone wall at speed years ago and I think it changed his priorities!)

Here's a couple that he's had

I'd love one of these to play with, That's a mate, Col, He takes them apart using oxy propane spanners, Every now and then a lost bullet goes with a bang and makes him jump!!

Here's a pic of my old Humber Hawk (Same engine as the Commer Walkthrough!!), It got smashed to bits by an idiot doing aroud 60mph hitting us head on, We were doing 40 but we were on the right side of the road!), It ruptured the wifes liver and she was given a 50-50 chance of surving it (She did!!)

The darned camera didn't fully wind on and double exposed one of my dads Hawks on the road!, He had two Super Snipes too! (It's from an old film camera as there were no digital ones in 1983!!)

My old Sunbeam Alpine that I had thirty years ago, It had a single Stromberg carb, I bought a pair of them off a Rapier and swapped them over, It was a bit nippy but needed contactless electronic ignition as the points bounced at high speed causing missing

It got hit in the rear by a van which bent the whole backend down pushed the rear wings out above the wheel arches, I was only third party insured so I had to get rid for next to nowt!

This was my aunts car, She got it at six months old, It had no powered steering and was a ballache to turn at low speed, My dad had it off her eventually, He bought a couple more scrappers for parts, We converted it to powered steering and had change everything, Even the steering column as it was shorter due to the bigger steering box!!, It took five hours to do!

It came to me when my dad passed away but cost an arm and leg to run the 2.6l straight six lump as the auto box only had three gears!

It could shift though!!

When I decided to let it go, A lad had been interested in it, He removed the body and fitted it to his Scooby, I don't know if he ever finished it, It was chassis number 0000000000000072 (Can't remember the actual amout of zero's but it was a lot of em!!)

The lad sent me some pics of the progress for a few years after but then they stopped

And finally 'Ooor Midge' that I won on fleabay, Started with the work then became too ill (Knackered knees) to carry on so she languishes in the garage!

I removed the orrible rubber bumpers and started to fill the holes behind it, Was going to try and get some stainless 3" tubing tigged up to fit front and back or maybe just go bumperless..

Oh well, Maybe i'll get Car SOS'd!!

Have seen one with a v6 from an Omega, think there is a diesel swap knocking about somewhere too. The favourite is a rover v8 just needs new mounts made but drops straight in. Want to keep this as original as possible.

3 seats, a beautiful design, but I think the engines were OHV Simca, so not as quick as they looked.
I wonder if someone has ever re-engined one with a suitably pokey motor... it must have been done.?

I had a '71 Marina van as my 1st car, cost me £15. 1.3 A Series.. low compression version. Only one front wheel brake worked, and no handbrake. That's how you learn to drive, the youth of today got it easy, blah blah..
Strong and reliable though, I would get another.. if it was a similar price today!

Indeed, well spotted!
That isn't the actual one I had, it is just an identical model found on the net, to give an idea what I'm on about. '71 is just an estimate.. My one was in worse condition than that prime example anyway!

I bought one of those years ago for about £50. It was a white one and the very dated pressed steel front panel had a bit of a dent in it so I put a ‘normal’ plastic grille off a Marina Saloon on it.

I was surprised that it fitted straight on, and it updated the looks no end! It looked like one of those really modern Escort vans!
