Not sure if I have posted before, my 1937 Series 2 Morris 8 I ran when I was a student.

It had been put in an old garage during the war and was sold when the garage started collapsing. Purchased in Methven, just outside Perth.

It must have been quite solid as I recall friends standing on the running boards at low speed. Also starting it with the starting handle when the battery was flat.

I see its currently on SORN.

My second bike, bought of the postmaster in Ballinluig in about 1981 for £200, rebuilt a few times, sold the original registration for £1000 in the 80's. Sold it about 10 years ago.

The crash damaged 76 T140V that my dad rebuilt and i got the use of once I was 19:

I think that there are less than 50 of these Piper P2's left. A 1970's kit car, with a square-tube steel chassis, sprayed chopped-strand fibreglass body, Ford 1600 crossflow engine, Corsair 2000E gearbox, Triumph Spitfire front end, Capri 3-litre back axle. Here are photos of mine coming out of 37 years in storage:

Back in the 70's, I went off to K&C mouldings to watch a demo of their chopper gun for GRP. Truck turns up with..... the mould for the Piper! Demo was laying up the body. Quite quick.

Morris 8 ! Lovely. I have had a hankering for one for a long time. Maybe a bit scary on todays roads though. I never liked the grille on the later model.

My Grandad had an Austin 10 before the war. I have gots loads of photos of that somewhere, but I don't think they were as good as the Morris

Mine is a daily driver and let me tell you, they are scary!

My recollection was dreadful acceleration, adequate brakes and vague steering with the bishop cam steering box. Though I found most other road users treated me well, let me out a junctions and waved.

I think you're being generous when you describe the brakes as 'adequate'!

Acceleration isn't too bad as long as you don't want to go much above about 25mph and vague is pretty spot on.

But you're right, you do generally get well received on the road. Particularly during the winter when they are the last thing anyone expects to see out and about.

Great fun all the same.

I think I mentioned here already, we took ours up to Shetland for the Classic Motor Show last year and had a great time driving around up there. That said, I did trailer it to get there!

That's a fair point. Weirdly, a well known feature of the Morris 8 is its very effective (mechanically operated) handbrake.

My sit-up Pop had FRN rod brakes, and I must say they were better than I expected, when adjusted right.

I had a Ford Special with a tubular chassis based on a Pop, it retained the cable brakes & they were very effective on a light vehicle, always gave the MOT man a surprise when he took it out with the old Tapley meter. The handling was terrible though, it suffered from awful bump steer. I had a 1935 Morris 8 as well, given it when I was 16, it had been in a flood, 3 feet of water. I got it running again, but ended up scrapping it, never getting it on the road.

My Mum, who was nine at the time, was on holiday at Perranporth in Cornwall when war was declared in 1939. Grandad wanted to get the family back home to Chatham in Kent as quickly as possible, as no one knew what was going to happen next.
They went directly from the beach, back to their guest house, packed all their things into the Austin 10 and started for home, still in their bathing costumes ! They changed into more appropriate clothing while stopped to let the engine cool on Dartmoor.
It was a twelve hour trip in those days, but took even longer as he was only driving on parking lights with the windscreen folded out so he could see. They were stopped several times by the Military and Police along the way, and eventually reached home at 8 am the following day.
I have a couple of photos of this holiday, and in the photos, there are a couple of tartan picnic blankets. I still have the blankets !
