better to keep your bsp fittings if your going to cast piping

Good point Gaz I will probably be welding in some metal bsp fiting to the rad part but I would hopefully think one can get bsp to mm fitting if I used 22mm copper pipe.

where's the cast piping? - I see a 1" BSP steel nipple at the top?

you will need a tee for an open vent or are you going to use another connection for a vent?

1" BSP and 28mm copper are same size in pipe terms

Jimmy I think gaz mean the rad by cast piping. here is something I got down off the net disregard the towel rail and the cooker will be my boiler. I think this is what you mean by venting,, Yes

That's heating pipe BS1387 medium grade / blue band tube - you can get cast but its normally in fairly old buildings. I think you will have some 6m lengths of 11/2" heating pipe for your rad?

Im not sure you will get much gravity circulation to the tank - if you are going to do it with gravity better with 28mm or inch pipe and you need a bit of head between the tank and boiler. Make sure its vented as if you dont get circulation the bloody thing will boil and you dont want it boiling with no where to go..

Needs to be vented as the Guy taking the unvented hot water cylinder course said - its not rocket science installing these - unless you do it wrong.

I have been looking at tanks a I have got a very clean 50 gallon drum



I am thinking as the water will not be held under pressure maybe a 50 gallon steel drum would be ok. I have pre-empted you giveing it the thumbs up and knocked up a couple of home made 3/4bsp tank fittings



and welded a to the side 150mm from the bottom and 150mm.



There is a ¾ bsp hold on the top of the tank I am hoping it will be ok to vent the system here as it will save me having to tee into the line.




Also I have found some 3/4bsp galvanized pipe




some of it has writing along the side



I am hoping this will be ok to use if only to test the boiler to see if it will heat up that much water.

Also another bit of luck father has given me this shed its only a small one but more importantly its all metal,



I need to fit a steel floor in it but I reckon its going to do the job

hopefully should have a test next week fingers crosseed

Your pipe looks like the right stuff - used to be BS1387 tube either blue or red band but its classified as BS EN 10255 now so it looks like its galvanized heating pipe.

Top connection for a vent is ideal

You will need 4 connections in total 2 for the boiler and 2 for connecting the radiators to the buffer tank. I would use those 2 for the radiator connection with the top one as flow. heat should rise to top.

Other 2 I would put on other side and maybe one in middle and one at bottom for boiler connections.

its wrong by the way blank off the top side connection

the method your using is the direct method not the indirect method that you have created

look up direct gravity fed heating system ignore the ones with a coil

reference is more on the heating of the water side of it

pump is on the return and so is feed from the tank

that system shouldnt be used nowadays but it still exists somewhere as they seperated central heating and hot water as it used to be together at one time
