Plasterboarding a ceiling.

Why?
If the boards are screwed to the joists, what effect would leaving the joists in have? It's basically like overboarding an existing ceiling?

Stuff 8x4 sheets go 6x3,ok if your downstairs anything up stairs PITA remember you've got to hump them sheets,and trust me they're not light

I'm actually going for 4x3 sheets - less waste, and same joints.
But easier to get in back seat of lexus(shogun is mot-less)

half inch boards are best in the larger sheets

Sorry - I meant laths.
If the laths are in good nick, can I not just leave them on, and screw through into joists?

I over boarded 6 ceilings in my house that were reasonably flat .only took one completely down as it was a mile out and as u say its a mess

You're not kidding it's completely covered up your usual blue complexion.

There's an inch of carp dust and 9inches of insulation being held up by the laths.
I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't want to remove the laths.

Could you remove strips of laths and then staple strips of something strong and thin to support the insulation while you remove the rest of the laths. Then just plasterboard over the top of it all ?

Quick poll:
3x2 CLS running at 90deg to joists with short pieces (noggins) screwed into joists.
To make a frame at perimeter of boards
Then screw plaster board to cls

Or:
Screw boards to joists (through laths) with joints on joists.
Additional:
Should I gripfill joints which are perpendicular to joists (to lath)

Not an expert in this, when I redid our house it was lath off, denail and then plasterboard on the joists.

However as a halfway house can you just remove 2 strips of lath, counterbatten with 2x1 batten in the gap, rinse and repeat every 400 centres

Because them horrid laths aren't flat enough,plus at your joints if you screw or nail the board in to much you'll crack the edges split etc,surface flat then board will be flat.
Plus the old laths make good kinder-ling

you can just board over the laths as the ceiling is not big enough to overlap the boards enough

i presume thats the landing your doing oh and wait till you plaster that slope as well chuckle

It wasn't really my choice to take the ceiling down.
I stripped the wallpaper from it, and most of it fell down .

Your lucky its dry,the amount of ones i've taken down wet after water leaks etc is another story

No no no remove the laths trust me

When you screw into the joists you should use proper plasterboard screws, they have a trumpet shaped head that is kinder to the paper skin, use one of these

they pull the screws in just the right amount into the PB then the driver bit cams out so that the paper skin doesn't get split.

The reason you have to remove the old laths is because the uneven surface and gaps will mean nearly every screw will tear the paper and blow the back off the PB meaning your plasterer will be inventing new words to describe you...

Easies way to de-nail after lath removal is to slide something heavyish (old axe, or spade) along the studs and break them off, they'll be quite brittle.

Start from the bottom and bang a couple of temp nails in so you leave a gap for the plaster to squeeze through, this and the scrim will strengthen the joints and you won't need noggins, on't worry too much about undulations in the PB, plasterer will fix that as long as he knows beforehand.
