My daughter phoned me up the other night saying that her car was running rough and making grumbling noises. We loaned her our car to get to and from work and brought hers to my place so I could spend the day looking at it. The only significant thing that happened prior to the fault was about 15 miles previous she went through a pothole so big it made her shriek, though I think this is unrelated.
Car is a 2008 Peugeot 207 1.4 petrol with 75k miles on it. Starts OK, but has rough idle, turns very rough with a tiny bit of throttle (off-load) then clears as you rev it a bit. Gets worse as engine warms to the point that it will sometimes stall.
I plugged in my basic ODB scan tool using 'car scanner' and it gave just one fault - P1340 which the scanner identified as cam position sensor B circuit malfunction. However, doing some internet research it seems that Peugeot use that code for "misfire cylinder no4"
I pulled the plugs and sure enough no4 is white where the others are black (car has had several cold starts prior to me pulling them so no surprise at the black ones). Indicating something at least is different with cyinder 4.
Plug 4 is on the left.
So today I have done the following:
Fitted all new plugs
Checked that the coils are all firing. They do with a half-blue half-orange spark (using one of the plugs above)
Swapped stick coils on no3 and no 4 over for empirical testing purposes.
Stripped out the fuel rail and set the injectors up in my workshop with 45psi air pushing a long pipe full of brake cleaner. Fired each one in turn with a 6v battery and they all fire with identical patterns, no dribbling etc.
Swapped injectors for cylinders 2 and 4 for empirical testing purposes.
Put it all back together and it's no different. Same OBD2 fault code.
Just in case I swapped the A and B cam position sensors over and got the same error.
Un-plugging the cam position sensor gives a different error.
I've run out of things to try now, I don't have access to a quality diagnotics tool so I'm a bit stuck until I find one. Looking for ideas based on experience if anybody has any.
