Do a compression test.

The engine management light will be on because of the detected mis-fire.
A lambda fault isn't likely to cause a mis-fire only on one cylinder.
The second lambda sensor takes longer to warm up and start producing values.
Due to the mis-fire, fuel trims will likely to be fluctuating wildly and not where they would normally be.

I will see if I can get hold of a compression tester tomorrow. I find it hard to believe that a car can go from perfectly running to rough idle in an instant due to a compression issue though. Even if it burned a valve up, it would only idle slightly roughly and it wouldn't go away with revs IMO.

Oil smelled normal, definitely no fuel in it. I actually did an oil and filter change just because I had it apart and it was about due anyway.

Going back to the original code picked up by the scanner I would check the timing hasn't slipped.
I've known two different vehicles have similar symptoms because of a slipped timing chain or belt.
The diagnosis you jave done so far suggests the camshaft sensor circuit is working but it could be that its not getting the correct signal when it should.
I find these codes can be a bit ambiguous but it still may be pointing you in the right area

Harness to the coil pack is a common fault on a lot of cars too, worth checking

Just in case your not aware and my apologies if I'm stating the obvious. But Peugeot number the cylinders backwards, so No1 is at the flywheel end.

If you swapped what would normally be 2 and 4 that would be 1 and 3 and might not be helping with your diagnostics. Again appoligies if I'm pointing out the obvious.

Well, the results are in and full marks to @m_c and a big thank you to @Windy Miller for not only lending me his compression tester but allowing me to modify it to screw into the funky M12 spark plug holes.

Compression test shows flat zero on no4 cylinder. I guess it's popped a valve or something.

Not what I wanted to see but at least I know the way forward....

You took the words out my mouth Pete just as i was reading the conclusion post from you

So the plan is:

Inspect the seat first to make sure it's not ruined.
New valve, strip the head down, lap all the valves in.
New head gasket (obviously)
New cam chain kit which it probably doesn't need but at 76k miles if I'm spending £200 on it I might as well spend the extra 120-odd then I know it's done
Nail it all back together and use zip ties where all the plastic loom connectors snapped
