I used to have B&D powerfiles, but they only used to last 2 or 3 years for me, I also had an issue with the small rubber roller on the end of the bar wearing into a ball shape. I've been using a Aldi one for a few years now (it hasnt broken yet) the small rollers on the end are steel so dont get rounded so give more even belt wear.

Made a start! Bit of 15mm box. 1mm wall.
I'm thinking a 16mm dia end roller / bearing might be too small a diameter? 18, 20? I've drilled the hole through 4.2mm.
I'd rather a proper bearing. 20mm OD, 4mm ID and say 11mm long would be ideal.

Bought one of the B&D files today following the recommendations here with a specific job in mind from B&Q taking advantage of the weekend 10% off offer. Ticket/website price is £50. Got to the till, presented my B&Q card to get the 10% off and was asked for £31.50, receipt showed the price as £35 before the discount. I cannot try it as the belts are missing, I reckon someone has pinched them whilst it was on the shelf. I've ordered a pack of the zirc' belts also recommended in the thread.

I'd go for another one of these corded B&D ones if my old one broke, don't use it day on/out but does not let me down with the right zirc belts.

Mine has just broken. It's done very well. I'll have a look at it, but, if it's a gonner, I'll buy the same again.
I replaced the wheel / bearing on the nose once before so, if I do get another complete unit at least Ill have a few spares.
They're not that expensive and mine has done a lot of work.

Coming to the end of a 100 bought at a yard salein US for 10 cents a belt no make but the best belts I have ever used only had 2 break

Oh, I'm not a club member so it won't do for me. Interesting that it came up as £35 when you got to the till though - last time I was in there they were £50.
I am pretty sure my powerfile is a steel roller.
Mine gets used quite a bit and never seems to suffer.
My 10 odd old B&D is a rubber sleeve over a steel roller, not had issues with it and seen a fair bit of work, odd the different experiences with them.
@optima21 did you have the belt grit the right way round?
Ive an old B&D one , so old its blue but its done a lot of work ,, Ive also a Dynabrade one but its air so often its not worth turning the compressor on to use it.
The B&D one gets used for all sorts , a very good bit of kit for the price , but you can go through a lot of the pads on the finger if your not careful and they are expensive for what they are .

Just found an amazing use for my powerfile.
Sharpening tungstens for my TIG
Bit tricky holding a battery drill in one hand and the powerfile in the other. Will hold it in the vice next time.
Far better than using a bench grinder. No dust and barely leaves a mark on the belts. Chews through the bench grinding wheels in record time!
