Cheers HughF...unfortunately I've already bought the stuff ....I will report back on how it performs.
Thanks for all the suggestions for the underside...JP I agree that the wax will probably have to be reapplied annually and therefore a bit of a hassle but will take a look at the RR site.
Steveo....totally agree on underseal...my current thinking is epoxy (3 coats) and then "possibly" a clear wax which just gets reapplied. I like the idea of being able to easily inspect and rectify any issues with the coating...thats the main reason waxy was immediately rejected!
Cheers Stevo...yep planning to use clear Dinitrol on the cavities and inside the shell behind the arches. Will wait until after the MOT I think.
Here is the main body with the bar coat...it went on well enough but was a real nightmare to get the gun cleaned out.
We'll be sheeting out fully for the main event but this was a good dry run I think. Those are decorators sheets which cost just £2.50 a pair from screw fix...can't really go wrong I think. We'll use them again for the high build primer coat but for the base it'll all be new sheeting.
Yea seems to be going off quite well...main concern I had was that the car has lots of different surfaces...bare metal, filler, original primers and paints, paints and primers from the "restoration" 4 years ago. If it was an original unrestored car I think I wouldn't have bothered with it...but given what it is I think we need a stable layer to start from.
On the plus side my new compressor worked a treat...I think it came on just once during the spraying and was easily able to keep up with the painting. So glad I decided to over spec...otherwise we'd be limited to spraying one small panel at a time and the barcoat would have gone off in the gun!
I should point out that Mr C did the spraying and also the filler on the rear quarters....although the masking is mostly me . He also let me clean the gun out...well I really do want to learn everything and nothing better than learning from someone who has been doing it for so long....35+ years!
I had cause to thump the chassis on the bus earlier when enlarging and reshaping where the brake cable conduit was being installed after it having 3-4 coats on the rail and it literally smashed the Epoxy where the hammer landed. It's certainly hard stuff and to repair that section I just feathered the edge and repainted with more 121 straight onto the chassis.
Yea epoxy is definitely tough stuff...yea steveo I think you are probably right. Think I'll try the epoxy next time (I have another Figaro to restore....why did I buy a second one!!!!!)...is that epoxy primer a two pack system and does it need all the breathing stuff or is it iso free do you know?
yea...we are currently using 3m organic vapour masks but for anything iso related I'd want air fed I think which would mean sorting out the breathing filter and mask and piping in clean air to the compressor. Thats basically why I avoided 2k paint....but now I know it might be available without iso I'll have a read I think.
For toughness epoxy can't be beat I think.
OK...just had a look at my paint suppliers web site and I think I read the info on 2k base coats and just assumed that the primers were the same but they aren't. Turns out that the 2k primers don't need full air fed equipment. Thanks for the info steveo....next car will be done in epoxy primer!
So MrC the painter couldn't make it today...I figured I'd help out by getting the masking done...then I got a little bored and figured the boot is an area that nobody sees anyway so why not give it a go
He has quite a nice spray gun (borrowed with permission of course)...it was so much nicer than using a rattle can. The paint fan is so much more consistent...and the volume you can throw out is so much higher....no more rattle cans ever again!!
Not bad for a first attempt. Only issue I had was a bit of dirt in the boot corner...oh and I hadn't realised that the vent hole in the lid would let paint out if I pointed the gun down hill!!!...have to sort that tmrw. Was great fun though...and that compressor is plenty up to the job...it kicked in half way through and then kicked out again.
Well I liked Mr C's spray gun so much I went hunting on fleabay...found a job lot of air tools for sale. In the lot was exactly the same gun....looks like it's never been used. Very happy man indeed....it even came with a service kit too.
Could have bought a new gun but I really liked using the vintage Devilbiss
The job lot also had this in too...feels like quality from the weight. I recognise the sintered brass filter as the regulator I recently bought has one too...anyone recognise the model or brand?
My current guess is a particle/water filter and then an oiler...I only have a filter at the moment so could come in handy. I won't be using this until I get a second air line...not going to run an in line oiler in the current hose as I need it clean for my painting.
Cheers Exuptoy...it weighs a ton so I figured it was very well made. Saw the Devilbiss sprayer so bought the job lot just for that alone...think MrC said he bought his sprayer in 1985!
The job lot also came with a huge number of air tools...here are some of the other bits. The guy who owned them was a furniture maker I think. It looks like he bought some quality tools over the years and looked after them....I do like vintage stuff...it is so well made.
I recently purchased a Desouter angle drill and collets off here and also have an old nailer out of a furniture factory years ago. Still works perfectly. Also have an old CP air drill. It's one of my faves.
Is that a JGA gun? Don't know if they did a gravity version.
If it is, I have a few needles and air caps that you can have (If I can find them) they were off a suction gun but should fit.
What set up came with the gun?
Cheers Dcal...just let me know if you find them....the gun is a Devilbiss gfg504. In addition to the pics above I got a bunch of hoses, connectors and several of the staplers and drivers. They had sold the compressor before I got there but I have my big clarke one so good on that front.
Here is the remains of the lot...I really liked those little pliers. No idea what they are for but they are lovely I think.
Sorry...i seem to haved turned this thread into an episode of American pickers!!
Also managed to add about half a dozen hammers to my growing collection....I use the old hammers as dollies and shape the heads when I need to bend some steel to a certain shape so I'm always on the lookout for hammers and tools which can be used for shaping.
Todays progress...I managed to find some 4m x 5m plastic sheets on amazon....these are perfect for the roof sheeting. One of the up sides of having a steel truss roof...and dozens of magnets! Pretty pleased...some smaller sheets on the sides and I was pretty happy.
Managed to get the bar coat on the roof...todays paint spraying lesson was if you don't clean your gun out BEFORE and after painting then you risk getting sludge spits over your paint.....grrrr. Luckily it's just the bar coat and I can flat it back...but it's a good lesson to learn at this stage! It happened once or twice on the boot but I put it down to some spillage from the top pot!
Lesson learned for next time....just glad I'm not learning this when doing my top coat!!
