It varies! More of a nice thing to do. My latest find is this matchbox. No idea if they were something her and her late husband commissioned back when its was renowned for food, or whether it pre dates their taking the pub over some 30 years ago.

Given the tiny printing on the label has a full STD number code, it might be a later repro. However, not all areas went full number STD overnight, it was staggered, depending on exchange changeover.

Seems to be after 1980,,,as they are safety matches , FIL had a 10 gallon carboy almost full of red headed matches collected from 1944 till 1982 from al over the world .. he said that red heads were no longer available in Canada due to the possibility of unintended detonation of them ,

A cricket ball hittg a box or tear off pack in your pocket was one example he gave .

As aforementioned I added new matches to the old box.

It could be that the box is particularly well kept but judging by the wear on the striker boards each side I'd say it's an old box with a "new" sticker applied. When I say new I don't think the sticker is a reproduction, more likely from one of the sheets held over when the company ceased trading. It's a murky world this matchbox collecting!

Whatever it'll be a great talking point on a cold afternoon in front of the fire up there.

Getting on with the wooden planter. Old scaffold board, 3D printed router stencils. A bit rough but that's more me / cheap router bits. Some tidying to do here and there. CNC it's not!

After 6 pints nobody will care!

If I do line the planter with DPM then wondering whether to groove the inside then fold / staple the DPM into it. This to limit the rain getting in between the timber and DPM. Stainless staples anyone?

I've made one, used decking. lined with an old grow bag. It's still; OK five years later.

Mulling a replacement sign for the front of the pub!

Would have to talk it over with the landlady of course. Quite by chance, I found that in 1992 at least, there was a big gold lettering on burgundy sign! This would have been about when here and her late husband took it over:

My daughter would love a crack at doing that. Now the obvious (and cheap) route is a scaffold board, routed as above. Then make it easy to remove and refurbish as and when.

Pretty sure there's a better wood to do it in. I might be able to score a yew plank. Routing that could be unpleasant if not downright dangerous.

Just a thought at the mo.

@DAPPH ? One for you maybe. I was thinking to drill some holes in the base then run round them with a router to radius or chanfer them. Then whack a bead of mastic around each and line with the dpm. When stuck puncture where the the holes are. Not sure on how many holes / what diameter. Or even whether to V the base in two pieces slightly like a keel.

Did a bit more on the planter. Cut all 5 bits tonight. The back is a tad warped but hey ho it'll fit with the rustic look.

Plan is to screw together with stainless 5x90 screws (Screwfix clearance years ago) and "glue". I say glue but I'm very low on Gorilla PU glue. Don't really want to spend out on more but I will if necessary.

Wondering if this stuff in a tube will work to form a waterproof joint between the various bits.

Cocked up and fitted three A2 6mm screws (lower right, front) instead of the 5mm ones I meant to. No matter, all the screws are slightly counter bored with a 3/8" flat bit and will be filled.

The short ends are also +1/8" over length as one of the long sides is a tad thinner than the other.

Weather permitting tomorrow I'll round over the edges with the router, shorten the end boards and do a bit of deft planing to lose where the long boards are bowed at the ends. I'll still have to disassemble it to do the drainage holes in the base. Then it'll be glue and screw back together. Need to find too some rope or something for handles. Did consider doing something with some 25x6 flat bar I have lying around but don't want some p***head slipping and banging their head.

My wood bothering is still better than my welding though!

Suggestions for rope handles please. Got a load of this abseiling rope. Was thinking route a pocket then join the rope ends with a beaten, copper pipe. Showing 22mm but probably a straight bit of 15mm would do.

What about a braided rope handle? There's all sorts of options, there's sure to be something on YouTube to provide a bit of inspiration. My late wife used to make a six strand plait to make handles for horse tack boxes but she used waxed sash cord. The ends of the handles were passed through holes in the box ends and each strand was nailed in place. I daresay you could do something with a single (you can do a single rope braid, as below, or even four strand flat, with a single cord), in that your abseiling rope is substantially thicker than sash cord.
I don't recall any handles on the tack boxes coming away, the biggest threat to them was from being ate by bored nags.

Who knows with a bit of practise, you could add another skill to the many you already have? A Black Belt 9th Dan In Macramé.
