Made a start on the tongue and grooves. The softwood strips are 12x32. Used a 12mm router bit in the bfo DeWalt. Went in 15mm. Will glue the tongues in with D4 and probably space the boards with a 6mm gap. Lots of routing still to do, chamfer the long edges etc.

Just chamfered all 4 corners on each fence slat and glued some tongues in. Used some Everbuild D4 glue off Amazon. Seems a bit cr@p tbh.
What do people put on the "floor" when creosoting?
My old neighbour I'm sure used to put down sand when he did his fence that separated his & my M&Ds drive. Quite what he did with the sand afterwards I don't know.
Thinking a tarp or length of DPM covered with sawdust.....then burn it. I've got a rubble bag full of sawdust from the routing.
There WILL be welding shortly albeit rustic.....like I can do anything else.....

In my determination to do the pub fence panel "on the cheap", I'm going to use these M10 black bolts to bolt the scaffold boards together
as in slats to the horizontals.
I need 32 (maybe 48 if I add a purely aesthetic third line). I've been collecting them for years and have loads. I say black, some are and some self colour. Bolts need to be M10x90 so I'll cut off the rhs, threaded section and weld a black nut on the cut, plain shank end . They're only Gr4.8 so as soft as.
I did think to keep the existing, nicely welded " bolt head" end, cut off the plain shank and re-thread.
It was only when I tried to die one down that I realised the plain shank is only 9mm diameter! The thread must have been pressed / formed.

That being said, the 9mm makes it dead easy to press an M10 nut on the end of the shank for welding. I'll use black nuts or strip the zinc off when I do them all:
How though to finish these? I don't mind a bit of rust, it'll add to the rustic look but I don't want them rotting out. The fence will be creosoted, hopefully regularly. I'll likely 3D print plastic caps for the heads and nut end.
Dip the bolts in grease before assembly, black them in oil maybe?

Thought I'd cut some metal tonight on the good old Scheppach bandsaw. Shortened 30 odd of the long black bolts, to make my M10 x 90s.
Each bolt came with two M10 BZP penny washers and a a full nut either black or BZP.
I'll give the nuts and cut shafts a degrease then a citric bath to de-rust / de-zinc before welding.
Of course I've a bunch of long "bolts" left over, 9mm shanks with an M10 nut welded on. They'll find a use one day!

Moisture-related radial and tangential dimensional changes might result in figures like that, but longitudinal (along the grain) changes would be far less...usually well below 1% for most woods.

Gotta love citric acid! Brought the bolts up a treat. Left to dry off without rinsing:

To blacken my free bolts, I've decided to heat them to cherry red over charcoal! Fitting as a bloke up the pub makes his own and gave me a bag. Good stuff it is too.
Then I'll dip them in, again free, waste engine oil.
On the lookout for a set of blacksmith's tongs.
