When I worked in a Working Men's Club in the 1960's the sign for the bar could have read Dog-Friendly - Wife Free, but didn't need to as no female would have thought of going there.
That's what the Lounge was for - Wife Friendly - Bloke Free.
Our local one had an unofficial colour bar until well into the 80's![]()
To blacken my free bolts, I've decided to heat them to cherry red over charcoal! Fitting as a bloke up the pub makes his own and gave me a bag. Good stuff it is too.
Then I'll dip them in, again free, waste engine oil.
On the lookout for a set of blacksmith's tongs.
And don’t mention the Irish Clubs. Our local ones were similarly sniffy about foreigners from down south - Durham, Hebburn, Jarrow etc.
There was no colour bar as apart from one local GP there were no non whites in town. There were separate Protestant and Roman Catholic Clubs though.

....Need to drill / slot the sign so the slats can expand & contract.
(Stainless sign was free too).
Just fix the sign on one side?
