I don't like the look of those heavy leads hanging from the welder, would it not put strain on the dinse sockets? Maybe a support bracket would be a good idea?

I think it will take a lot more than just the weight of the leads hanging to do damage, that is also one thing I like about it, it has normal size (35/50) dinse sockets instead of the baby ones that normally come on these wee welders.

I remember doing a repair years ago where pulsed mma would have been useful!

There was a huge through flow deep fat fryer & the bushing on a sprocket in the cleaning system had worn, allowing the cog to wear a hole in the side of the tank. To get access to tig weld it meant 3 hours of dismantling so mma was the only option. Not easy as the tank was only 3mm thick, thinner where it was worn. Not enough room for a patch so it was a case of a series of overlapping tacks until the hole was filled. Took quite a while & a lot of rods as once the rod got to 50% it could no longer reach the panel!

That was one long Saturday morning!

Having a wee mess with the pulse again today seeing as how I am about to do a fair bit of alterations to a stainless boat trailer.

Did some vertical up with 3.2 electrodes.
A wee bit of weave in time with the pulse.

Before slag chipped off.

Slag off and a quick wire brush.

Next up I ran alongside but no weave at all, just up with the pulse.

And with slag off.

Quite happy with it as with 316 vertical up on a flat plate you normally, or at least I do, get a pronounced peak in the middle.

Bit more messing required but I see potential in using the pulse.

I would imagine pulse mma would be a nice touch on 2mm steel uphill, no weaving, let the pulse fuse
the joint and move up for the next pulse without extinguishing the rod, have never done it but this would be how I would like to approach thin metal uphill with a pulsed stick, and as mentioned it should work on the heavier metals uphill too, its just a different approach than christmas tree V or Z type of patterns, and is about the only alternative I can think of while using stick uphill on light material to keep your speed up.

I hardly do any stick nowadays and when I do it is nearly always stainless. Next week should be a good test for things when I alter the boat trailer. It will all be mainly 5mm thick RHS but there will be some 2mm I think.

What frequency did you use?
Since I have the Fronius Transpocket I find I do almost all stainless with 2Hz pulse.
The weird but good thing is that I don't get any slag inclusion using pulse on stainless. Especially in V grooves I allways get slag inclusions somewhere with stainless and have to grind them out. With 2Hz pulse every stainless weld went in fine so far.
Haven't figured out the reasoning behind this yet.

I never have an issue with slag inclusion in stainless, never have although I know one of the welders in the boat yard often does and he avoids if he can

Doing some more messing around with the settings and getting to a place I am liking.

2.5mm 316 electrode vertical up.

Ran a 3.2mm 316 up in the middle, seemed good.

Then another alongside.

Some 3mm thick stainless.

2.5mm 316 rod vertical up.

Some 1.5mm stainless with 1.6mm electrode vertical up, bit wiggly .

Tried with a 2.5mm electrode on the 1.5mm stainless but struggled as it needed more current than I could give it due to the thickness of the material.

1.5mm stainless outside corner vertical up with 1.6mm 316 electrode.

Bottom one the current was too low, struggled to maintain the arc. Bumped it up 3 amps for the top half.

It is definitely going to be handy for thin stuff or vertical butt welds on thicker, for vertical inside corners on thicker I think probably just normal will be the way to go.

Tried a bit of 3mm box vertical up no pulse, bit out of practice and the restart a bit messy but should be ok after a few more goes.
