I will have to have a mess around with all the settings when I get a chance.
The manual doesn't really say what the balance is or at least not from what I have seen so far or maybe I am just not following.
It seems however that the display current you set is average current and you can set the pulse current as a percentage of that. The low pulse current is then set automatically depending on the balance and pulse current as the display current will always be the average. Or at least I think that is what it means

I tried a quick test on some 1.5mm stainless with 2.5 rods, just a butt weld and I didn't really have much time to mess around with things but this was the result, not great but not bad either on thin stainless.

According to Fronius the pulse current is the max current (not the average) you set with the amperage nob and that is on the display.
The base current is the low current which is automatically calculated from the set pulse current and the set frequency.
The duty cycle (length of pulse) is also preset depending on set pulse(max) current and set frequency.

I have now found a bit about the setting range and it does seem the balance is what I thought it was.

Ok. As i understand this, on the EWM you set the main current (average current) with the dial and then you can set the max current (pulse current) as a percentage of that main current(has to be more then 100%).
You also can set the balance (duration of high and low amperage) and frequency.
The low current is then defind by the electronics.

Like i first thought, the EWM has a bit more parameters to play with (or lose track of) then the Fronius.

Yes, that is what I understood it as but the strange thing is if you look at the pulse current in the second image it says it can be set between 1 and 200% so...

Yep, I don't get that either. On the pulse schematic it states i Pl>100%.

Whatever it is, this pulse function is a very nice and usefull feature for thin stuff and i love it.

It does go down to 1 and up to 200.
So I set it at 60 to see what it was like and I actually liked it a lot, still not sure what it does yet as I never really had much time to mess around but it seems like it may make it cooler.
This was a 3.2 6013 with the IPL @ 60, pulse and balance at default, 2 and 30 and main current at 110Amps.

I also tried that setting with a 2.5 6013 and I think 50 amps for a vertical up. I never manipulated the rod at all, just a straight line and the result was quite good.

Like the look of the vertical up , Didn't know pulse gave those results wish I did when I had a bunch of positional welds to do

It is showing potential but a lot more messing required to see what each setting does and which suit me the best. It was similar with the EWM Phoenix took a lot of messing around to find out how each setting affected things but it is worth it.

Yup think i will have to practise and mess around with the settings on some scrap and offcuts before using it for proper jobs.

It is a bit confusing.
According to the manual you set the AMP current which is the average current on pulse.
Then you set the pulse current (IPl) as a percentage of that AMP current and then the pixies inside the machine calculate the pulse pause current (IPP) so that the average current (AMP) is maintained at all times.

So if you set the pulse current (IPL) at less then 100% of the AMP the calculated pulse pause current (IPP) has to be higher then the AMP current to maintain that setting as average current.

Do i make sense?

Aye, I am going to have to experiment and try and concentrate on what the differences are with different settings to see if I can work out exactly what it is doing.
I reckon I will end up with two or three combinations of settings that work well for me in a similar way to those I have settled on with the Phoenix.

I really like it on thin sheet and especially thin stainless. So far i was able to get good penetration without blowing holes.
I feel it also can be useful for open root with a big gap and/or bad fit-up but i doubt i will use it for position work on thicker stuff where i want good heat and penetration and fusion.

Interesting to read this. I was very tempted to buy one an try pulse arc, although i've not yet done any arc welding. Apparently i can do pulse arc on my Tetrix too, i had previously thought it might only do that in TIG.

These EWMs are complicated machines..

Both welds certainly seemed to have good penetration but once I have it dialed in the way I want I will do some cut and etch tests on them to see.

The Paton I bought has pulse but I haven't tried it yet.

In my mind the way the way I was thinking about it was I set say 80A as the current....then I can set a dip in current (and time of dip) to help solidify the weld pool before going back to the set current.

I was planning to play around with it and see what happens....mainly I thought it would help with thinner stuff and positional work that I struggle with (I'm new to stick).
