Are there any more posts, after dieselkid 63 @05:28 Thursday, (apart from this one) that I can’t see on my ‘puter screen? I ask because the forum threads list indicated there was one, that I could not see, on Friday.

Well you can have this. Bearings back in, but loads more to do before I can seal her back up. New gasket, clean all the bolts, clean out the inevitable sludge out the oil seal, then re-mount all the track gear.

Carb is giving me more hassles. I’ve taken out a copper gasket in there that was toast. Given it a proper clean, fuel proof gasket in the threads that were leaking when the pump was primed. Almost ready to reassemble.

I should add I’m looking at changing to a different carb, something with a needle I can actually adjust the flow of petrol on - but that’s all cost. MG6s came with an improved Amal carb, whereas mine is Ransomes own - brass plumbing pipe almost! I really want to get the tractor out again, this is holding it back.

I’m also getting made a set of four BSF tapped and cut spacers so I can make the tractor a wide track variant. Then I can add track blocks.

Really enjoying this thread, probably because I’d really like one of these to play around on (and I nearly bought one years ago, but chickened out as I had nowhere to put it at the time).

my old mans one had an adjustable main jet a finely threaded needle that pokes itself up into the jet
screw it out to richen in to weaken
think it was amal that had a butterfly valve , any amal bike carb 375 monobloc
or a 26 mm concentric would be ok
after playing with the slide ,jets etc
as long as it dosent have a governor tied in with the carb

Carb reassembled, gasket sealant all round - fuel proof this time, after discovering RTV is not Need a new washer, probably a Dowty type underneath the bowl screw. New split pin in the primer, that was tricky to get in. I’ll leave it to dry now.

Yes! Gasket sealant put in, fuel pump primed and all the connections nipped up - no fuel leaking, and fuel is appearing in the float bowl. Happy

Remembered a box of fibre washers I got off Facebook Marketplace for $5, and there was one in there that was perfect. Thanks for the tip!

It did briefly run but it’s not running well. The plug is black and wet, indicating unburned fuel. Fuel is flowing the wrong way out of the carb back down the air intake.

When I do turn it over a puff of white grey smoke comes out the exhaust - sometimes it ignites with a bang, sometimes just hisses and the smoke appears. Not sure if it’s just cold or it’ll I need to adjust something else?

It sounds like it's running very rich and if you've fuel running out the carb the float valve / needle is not sealing.

Or possibly fuel entering the float chamber without going through the float valve or a stupidly high fuel level in the float chamber (sticking float or float valve needle fitted wrongly).

As I suspected, I’m going to have to strip the bowl off again and inspect the valve. I can see why we made the switch to direct injection, carbs are a nuisance!

You are aware that this is it right? Magneto, carb, spark plug and exhaust. That’s all there is…

Mag wasn’t giving a spark. Took the cable off and got a better connection - now it is sparking. Will it start? Of course not. Reason? I don’t know.

No reason why, if you really wanted you could be silly and convert all that to electronic ignition and injection..... we managed it with an 18L v8 from an antar

One of my daft ideas is to take some kind of basic engine, possibly a cheap Briggs & Stratton, and see how far it could be pushed with electronic ignition and fuel injection.
