My Wife's car has front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. It also has grazes on all four bumper corners and a dent on the front wing because "a bollard was in a stupid place". My van has two mirrors and no windows past the front doors, it also has one single small dent half way along the offside. My wife opened her car door onto it.

There simply isn't enough technology in the world for some.

I'm not in a competition, I'm running a small business. My rate is dictated by my overheads and what I need/want to earn. I quote accordingly and people are welcome to decide to use someone else for whatever reason they want.

Plenty of people out there who charge based on a figure pulled out of the air. They come and go, for obvious reasons.

Exactly...and if they all choose to use someone else because your costs have skyrocketed..........OR more likely use no one, as they can't afford the higher costs.

building sites do use diesel cement mixers or the big ones do

the truth is known many people have abused red diesel

including the heating side of it

red should be for farms orange or blue for heating and white for normal use all with different taxes to be paid on them

It depends on how you view a ‘builder’ and the impact of taxed (road legal) diesel as I think the impact will be significant…

If you are doing an extension or new kitchen, then red diesel doesn’t really feature, but I delivered a recent project that was £6.5m over a 40 week programme - during the initial weeks I had 3 x 360 machines and 3 x Moxie dumpers on site, plus other smaller plant, site lighting etc - we were doing around 3,000 litres PER WEEK!

If we had to use road legal diesel, the fuel costs would have effectively doubled.

The other issue is that white diesel (tax paid) will be indistinguishable from the stuff you are buying from the pump - theft from sites (with those lovely folks running around overnight with an off-white transit, a pair of IBC‘s and a pump…) has always been an issue but if there’s no way of telling pump diesel from stolen diesel, guess where the Bradford taxi drivers (and others…) are going for their fuel…

Sorry, I think removing red diesel from construction has far reaching consequences!

I've never been the cheapest, far from it. Others have come and gone since I went self employed, as have two recessions. There's always work because there are always people with money who need it doing, and I'm sure it will be the same through future recessions.

Under charging, or not charging the correct rate based on your costs, is probably the greatest danger to a business. It's certainly been the most frequent cause for those I've seen go under, the second being too much dependency on a single or low number of customers.

The price of everything we build is going to go up.

I've moved now but my last job involved borehole drilling, so the rig runs on diesel, the pumps and mud puppy runs on diesel, the telehandler runs on diesel, generators, and every other piece of equipment uses diesel. Some stuff was being replaced with electric equipment, however most sites did not have a suitable supply so we just had multiple diesel generators running

Our local filling station sells red. I was filling my van up with £161 of white the other day and cars were queuing up at the red pump. The red is £1.38 a litre.

Red Diesel duty is just under 43p per litre less than road Diesel so it's nothing like a doubling in price. I think in some cases people are comparing the bulk price for Red ordered by the tanker load, with the price per litre for road fuels from a retail filling station. So as an example taking that £6.5M project, if they had to use road Diesel instead of Red, 3000L per week for 40 weeks, that would be a cost increase of just under 0.8%. That may be an over estimate as it was described as using that much fuel "during the initial weeks".

You are right there.
A chap who used to work for me got pulled at a fuel supply place. Saturday morning. HMRC did a sting there. Caught 25 people.
I reckon the owner of the fuel place dropped them in it to save his own skin. Not a nice chap.
Chap was fined £300 and told not to do it again.
It is a civil matter apparently.
And yet you can legally run your car on electric or cooking oil and not pay a penny fuel duty because it is "green"

300 quid fine, that two tanks fo fuel for my car at current white prices!
