Resin or rawl plugs or ??

i need to secure the bottom of a couple of fence posts to a brick wall. The posts will also be firmly supported about half way up their length so the fixing into the brick is not taking “all the load” but it does neee to be secure.

I had planned to use some hefty rawl plugs with M10 or so coach screws through the lot.

I think resin and studding might also work but I’ve never used it and for reasons various I only want to do this once.

The one method I know doesn’t work is the steel expanding fixings (sleeve anchors?) as they seem to work loose in the brick.

So what do people recommend from their own experience ? Thanks in advance .

If your onabout cheap sleeve fixings I don't like them either, if you use a length of studding and a proper expanding bolt and recess the nut into the wall and clamp that in first leaving the remaining stud to go through your post then use another nut and washer to pull the post up to the wall, might not have explained it well but it works.

Resin and studding is permanent. If things change in the future, it'll be a grinder job to take the studs off flush. The hammer fixings are removable. Both will work.

Personally, I'd go for the resin every time, unless the future removability matters.

If you've not used it before, it's important to waste the first bit that comes out, and to only actually use it once it's coming out properly mixed. Other than that, it's quite close to idiot-proof.

I used resin and stud to secure a large radiator to the bay window brick work in my house.

There was an "incident" that destroyed the bay brickwork.

During the cheanup work I found the bricks with the studs still glued in...instead of pulling out the stud the bricks had broken...pretty impressive stuff.

I use drop-in anchors with bolts wherever possible... they work in most situations apart from hollow breezeblock, or old, knackered rendering. In that case, I'm now a huge convert to resin!

Just had a quick look on the screwfix page, there is quite a range of resin! Is the cheapo ‘easyfix’ stuff any good or is it best to stick with Fisher/Rawl brands etc? Just in the easyfix range they have chemical, polyester, styrene free and vinylester types.

I’m considering using it to hold down one of those Simpson strong ties in a carport.

I've been using everbuild anchorset, it seems good stuff. Be sure to buy some extra mixing nozzles.

If you are going into brick or block any resin will be stronger than what you are going in to, so for your application I’d say any will do.

If it’s safety critical, or structural and going in to something like reinforced concrete a pure epoxy is best but other types can be made to work and the fixing will fail before the resin.

If it needs to be removable a good option is to resin in a threaded sleeve and fix the bolts or thread bar into that. This is usually a better job because you are spreading the load from the fixing into a larger area but you need to watch your edge distances. However that’s true of any fixings and the resin is more forgiving than any fixing that relies on expansion to create friction to hold the part.

Studding and resin works fantastic, but you have to remove all the dust from the hole,

Using a bottle brush and a pump, the more dust you remove, the stronger it is, it’s usual to use the brush four or more times then blow out, using a balloon pump or similar,

You want a proper puffer to clean out holes for resin studs. They agitate/move debris in both directions as in a blow / suck action. Makes for a cleaner hole.

As a test try a Hoover (sucks) or compressor (blows). It'll appear clean. THEN use a proper puffer. More dust will come out.

The cheap standard Easifix resin works pretty well for just about anything that doesn't specifically call for something better, and seems to fit your application.

If you only have a couple or so to do, the 175ml resin cartridges which fit a standard cartridge gun are probably the most cost-effective. If you have many to do, the bigger 380ml tubes are nicer to use and it doesn't take very long to pay for the special gun.

If you are likely to be going into a cavity, the plastic sleeves are probably a good idea but be aware these need a bigger hole. If you are just going into a blind hole, you'll usually get away with 1/2" holes in the steelwork, offer it up, drill 12mm holes in the concrete or brickwork, clean out as well as you can, squirt in the resin, push in the M10 studding, wait a bit, do up the nut. Job jobbed. If you use the sleeves, they need a bigger (16mm?) hole and you'll either have to mark the holes and move the steelwork out of the way to drill, or have humongous great clearance holes.

Thanks all for the experience. The cautions about resin and cleanliness etc above are what is making me hesitate. As in the original question I can’t be going back to fix this if it doesn’t work. It is The neighbours side of the wall I will be attaching to and it will cause her all sorts of confusion and worry if I need to go more than once. I might get some resin and try it on another hole first to “get my confidence up”. Once I go round I need to be in, attached and out again to get the fence up as quick as I can.

It’s also reassuring to know the plastic plugs will be ok if that has to be.
