Riello oil burner playing up

.75/80EH on an RDB1 needs 8 bar in my grant unit (the pdf i linked to above)

Some manuals give the air setting for the burner, but the document above gives the gas readings, and expects the installer to adjust the air accordingly (ie the proper way of doing it) but, in your case, if you assume it was set right before, then installing at 8bar is unlikely to hugely change things.

Firstly, massive thanks to everyone on here who has helped out.

By coincidence, our plumber rang me last night (a friend had mentioned we were having boiler problems to him) and I chatted to him. He popped round this morning and within two hours both boilers were fixed and tuned correctly to the right pressures and air flow to get the correct flue readings. The new pump has fixed the initial problem. Once the cold is definitely behind us, I will empty and clean the fuel tanks and lines, renew all the filters and probably add a couple more inline just before the fuel lines go into the boilers.

One more question - we have the normal, fairly cheap aluminium bowl type filters on the lines at the moment? Is there something better that perhaps is see through and also has a water trap/drain on it that would be suitable to go in 10mm lines? That way, they could be monitored and maintained more easily.

I, personally, would not trust a clear bowl with a big tank of kerosene behind it.

The new "bio" suitable tigerloops have done away with the clear top also, which tells you somthing maybe. The non-bio ones still have the clear top.

Interesting - is that because they break or because it encourages bacterial growth etc? I guess I wanted a visual aid that screams - 'drain or clean me!'

In my search for diesel line filters for another tank, there are some clear ones for those so I just wondered about them for the kerosene but then the diesel tank will have a valve that will be turned off straight after the tank outlet...

Now the boiler at the end of the oil line that the one with the original fault was on is locking out intermittently!! Every two days or so! I have cleaned the filter on that (it has an external one just prior to the entry into the pump), but will clean it again and perhaps the internal one on the side of the pump itself. I guess there is a chance we have stirred up some muck in the line.

sounds standard to me - oil lines or the pump or whatever just take time to get all the air out. i dont really even fully understand why, but its pretty standard.

i guess its part of the reason tigerloops even exist - i mean, walk around a new estate thats not in a mains gas area, and every single house will have a tigerloop fitted - im thinking thats not because they reckon their entire building team cant torque up an olive correctly.

I’d try a box , just make sure you get correct digi or analog type. When they play up these boxes cause all sorts of strange symptoms. Also these burners get a low voltage return on one of the motor wires (White i think ) 50v I seem to remember but check with Riello tech. If this voltage is not present it could be motor.

I had this after doing everything else. Only new bearings cured it for good.

See my link above there's some pics in there of rust coming out of the bearing behind the pump. You can try and squirt some lube in there and see if it goes for longer without locking out.

Thanks - i had a good read of that thread the other day. Thing is, this is another boiler on the system! I havent touched any parts on this one...! It has clean fuel and is bled properly. So it could well end up being what you say!

So I didn't want to speak too soon but I bled the house boiler 10 days ago again following your post and it hadn't locked out until this morning. It does sound somewhat like Onoff's problem on this one. The other two boilers are working fine now. We are going to get some zoning done on this boiler so it is easier to control the two buildings it heats in a month or two so will get our plumber to take a look at it then if it will survive until then.

A cup of 2-stroke oil chucked in the oil tank ar a gallon of diesel mixed with the same amount of heating oil and slung in might help lube a sticky pump for a bit. Seemed to work on mine for a bit until I simply had to change the bearings.

Out of interest, how much were bearings vs a new pump? I have clear evidence of water that's got into this line - I suspect that might have led to the failed pump on the other boiler and failing one on this one. My theory is that one of the boilers was run too soon after filling the tank (I cant always control this) and has sucked crap into the line before it all had chance to settle out. I have bought some water finding paste and a pump that will attach to normal hose that will run from my drill (self priming to 3m) so I can attempt to remove any water from the bottom of my tank.
