Ed, the lower section of the twist lock is for locating so the lower will come up through the chassis plate that should be the same shape as the lock and not round and into the frame on the picker plate which should also be the same shape, all the top part does is go up through the pickers chassis plate ,rotate 90 degrees and then clamp down using the adjuster.. All the locating is done through the lower section of the twistlock which is why it needs to be a snug fit through both upper and lower plates.

@Robbie260 - how do you tell which way is locked and not - is there a convention? I'm assuming that normally the slots in the container are aligned along their length so depends on how they are mounted. For example in the picture above with the ones mounted on the 6x6 I'd assume that was in the "locked" position?

I was wondering why there was a notch cut in the bracket underneath - looks like it's to locate it in this configuration. Perhaps it designed so it can tuck out of the way nicely. But then you've either got to mount it under the bed or have a socking gurt thick container bracket because that's about an inch between the plate and the locking bit. But it's the only way it allows the bottom to be used as a locating pin.

Usually the ovals run forward to aft, on Deck mounts and containers. So forward to aft is usually open position and port starboard is closed.

Container deck mounts should be fairly easy to get from a ship chandeler. Turn them upside down and weld them into what ever you want to attach to the landy.

So that's it in the fully locked position. These lorry ones are a little different from shipboard auto locks. That will now screw down tight on to the mount point in the container and prevent side to side as well as fore and aft movement.

As Robbie says, that’s it locked down. We have one REALLY old trailer with those on. They’re a paint because dirt gets into them and seizes them as I found out. The newer type with a handle are much less luckily to get stuck from what I’ve found.

Yup these are "lorry ones" - but if it's in that scenario then my plates on the "container" need to be just over an inch thick in order for the top bit to clamp down. Not averse to doing that but seems a little exccessive for a little old Landy . Reason I got these ones were a) they were cheap and b) they had a screw on them to clamp things down properly.

These do have an option for a handle at the bottom but I'm guessing that's not what you mean.

If that's the case then they're mounted on the **** by 90° but as it's not conforming to any standards I don't care because everything will be made for this. (I.e. the slots in the "container" / body are port / starboard).

I think there's enough clearance under the old bed to use them as in the fully locked photo above because that was 4" Aluminium C section if I remember correctly.

These are the type I mean. All our twist lock trailers apart from one have these on. Once they’re in the upper position it’s just 1/4 turn and ready to go.

Aye I'd seen that picture before (I've even seen the thing in the flesh ) - the difference having spent the last 20 minutes browsing crappy YouTube vids is that the one I have is designed more for a flat bed so that the pin can be retracted completely and not get in the way of a bed (i.e. there's nothing protruding up above like normal).

It just means that I'll need to do like you and weld some packer plates probably on the body side of things to space it out >26mm otherwise the threaded portion is pointless.

Ah OK - I know what you mean now - basically it's the more basic and sloppy version of what I've got . Mine should have a handle on the bottom (it has provision for it) but I was too cheap to buy one (plus I couldn't work out which was the right one) so I'll make one instead. There's a spare roll pin at the bottom of the thread which allows you to put a handle through to do the 1/4 turn twist as you describe.

I'd deliberately not gone that route because you can't "clamp" the "container" down. Given it's a Land Rover and I have a tendency to take them stupid places I'd rather not have a couple of tonnes just loosly held in place. Case in point - I mean it was stupid before I drove into a big mud hole that a twin locked (mine didn't have them on that trip) 80 Series Land Cruiser on DIY portal axles and his "small" set of 40" tyres had failed to get through.

But I have it sorted now I think - fully retracked and below the "bed" (well it sticks up a couple of mm)

Then if you ensure the thread is fully undone you can push it up and rotate it 1/4 turn to put it into the "mounting" position for aligning the container as Bob says - note it's resting in some slots cut below the plate.

Then if you turn the imaginary handle on the bottom then you "lock" the container onto the bed but it can still bounce up and down a fair bit.

So now you want up the handle with the gurt big spanner that Bob refers to and the top of the pin gets pulled tight down onto the container corner clamp (note how it's retracted into the casting).

So all this means is I've got to fab up a handle and a 'C' spanner for tightening the bed and any brackets on the cherry picker and flat bed need to be between ~26 and 36mm thick to allow proper clamping down.

Well after the carnage of last week and the sun being out I decided I fancied some tinker time and finished off the frame for the twist locks. It's a slight shame that I couldn't turn the two bits of RHS through 90° and tuck them inside the chassis rails (would need to modify fuel tank a tad) because it would be stronger that way around the tipper frame when I get around to it.

But anyway - part way through finishing off - there were another couple of tabs welded on the rear cross member to pick up the extra tow bolt holes and then managed to lift it all off and weld up everything fully.

Then I had to go off and retrieve the flat-bed from where I'd dumped it. Only slight issues were the kitchen gardens are a bog at the moment so driving a 5.5t 4 wheel steer narrow but tall machine is entertaining to say the least. Oh and someone bent the pallet fork headstock on Thursday so a couple of ratchet straps and the bucket sufficed.

A little bit of manhandling the bed into position - battery's completely shot on the 6x6 and my jump pack needed charging. Not in it's final position here as I did a little bit of chopping of the ali frame (there were a couple of extensions front and near the rear) to make it sit better on the sub-frame.

And magically, as if I'd planned it (I didn't) all the twist locks sit inside the bed frame . Even more magically a 20mm plate will be the perfect thickness to be bolted up to the ali frame and provide the necessary depth for the twist lock to clamp down on.

And then in typical fashion it's started raining so retreated indoors as my new workshop is in utter chaos at the moment having the walls rendered.

Well had an email from the plasma guy and my various bits and bobs of 20mm plate will be ready for collection tomorrow so I'll nip by on the way back from getting my jab and collect them.

Not a bad turnaround for sending in the drawings in on Monday evening and getting them two days later - particularly when they don't regularly cut 20mm. Shame 20mm is so damn expensive but hey ho.

Hey @sako243 , couple of nosey questions for you if you don't mind. Is the plasma guy CLH trailers? I've not done much with them but have been impressed with their helpfulness, and the size of their operation.
Are you pi logic? Your posts occasionally mention some clever electronics capability, and there isn't that much around here?
And finally, if you are pilogic, is this a descendant of physiological instrumentation, which then (I think became Magstim? (I went for a job interview with PI 38 years (crikey) ago when I came out of my apprenticeship with the mod). I went to Dairy Crest for 6 years...

Yes it's CLH who've got the CNC plasma - they've had it for 6 months or so I think now. They're always incredibly helpful and I'd rather send my money their way than a useless company like Dyfed Steel (messed me around no-end on delivery and to boot Chris has been able to better their prices anyway since he buys direct and so much).

@stuvy I think the main reason for the fast turnaround is they're not "trying" to make a profit from it. I had a long chat with Chris (owner) over a year ago now about CNC Plasmas, basically they've been struggling for a while to keep up with their workload (at the moment there's a minimum 20 week waiting list across the board for any of their trailers). Considering I'm fairly sure they can knock out the smaller ones (highest demand) in about a day (minus the galvanising) that's saying something. To put it in perspective he has an artic load of trailers going to the galvanisers every week without fail.

Basically his options were build another fab shop and employ more people or try and streamline some of the business. Employing more isn't without risk and with the everything going on he decided to invest in a CNC plasma to cut down the time required for making brackets etc. Looked at water-jet, laser etc., but for their purposes a high-def plasma had the accuracy required and kept it to the lower end of 6 figures... But as all sensible people he's opened it up for taking outsider jobs and they've been getting quite a lot.

Originally when I enquired about 20mm stuff he said it might be a few weeks until they have enough to warrant it. I think that they're not quite as flat out as he imagined and Mark (the guy who runs the plasma) has got pretty got at swapping over materials and nesting stuff into random bits of sheet so can usually accomodate odd jobs fairly easily.

@minimutly yes - you've guessed it correctly (mostly), "nothing" to do with Magstim. I helped them out when I was still in school with some software issues then ran away to London for Uni and did a stint in the South East for about 10 years for a "cyber-security" company that got bought out by a large defence company. Returned back here almost 2 years ago now to start taking over things. Basically my parents knew the directors of Magstim and had similar (medical) backgrounds. We started off in data acquisition stuff mainly, do a lot of different things now including remote control power steering systems for things (including stunts in a number of bit block buster movies).
